We are seeking a Cyber-Physical Systems Intern to help us deliver and defeat powerful intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and targeting (ISR&T) capabilities. Wait… what in the world is a Cyber-Physical System (CPS)? There are lots of examples of CPS, but we are interested in “smart systems” featuring networks of devices that can sense, process, and communicate information. Our multi-disciplinary teams build CPS prototypes that use these capabilities to provide exquisite situational awareness to users in the homeland security, military, intelligence sectors. We employ a wide range of advanced technologies from machine learning to autonomous vehicles to power our solutions. Meanwhile, we also help our sponsors understand and counter the threats posed by the rapidly expanding CPS technology being employed by our adversaries.

As a member of our team...

  • You will contribute to hardware and/or software components of cyber-physical prototypes ranging from tiny autonomous systems to entire “smart” environments.
  • You will test, evaluate, troubleshoot, and document cyber-physical systems to understand their strengths and weaknesses.
  • You will develop capabilities to ensure the operational success of our sponsors as they employ and encounter these systems in the real world.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Are pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or a closely related field.
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Are proficient in software development using Python, C, and/or C .
  • Have strong communication and interpersonal skills, and are skilled at developing relationships across diverse teams.
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you have knowledge or skills in the following areas…

  • Sensing technology principles and applications (e.g. cameras, PIR sensors, LiDAR, RADAR).
  • General purpose data manipulation and analysis packages such as NumPy, Pandas, OpenCV, etc.
  • Machine learning for detection, classification, and identification.
  • Large-scale data curation, SQL and NoSQL databases, and graph analysis.
  • Edge computing devices, such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or NVIDIA Jetson platforms.
  • Mobile application development for Android and/or iOS environments.
  • Autonomous vehicle guidance and control algorithms and software.
  • Software applications employing the Robot Operating System (ROS).
  • Wired and wireless networking architectures and protocols.
  • Electrical or mechanical computer aided design.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
