Are you intrigued by puzzling problems in software and space science?

Do you want to help provide data analysis and visualization tools in support of NASA-focused exploration projects?

If you are pursuing a degree in Computer Science or in Physics or Astronomy with a passion for programming, we would love to have you join our team.

We are seeking an intern to help us develop tools to help scientists analyze, visualize and understand space science data. We work in an exciting and collaborative environment to solve challenging technical problems in the Space Science domain. You will be joining a team of engineers and scientists who make mission data available to not only the science users but also the public.

As a member of our team...

  • Your primary responsibility will be developing software systems – adding new features and resolving existing issues.
  • You will support science projects by creating data pipelines and preparing data for ingestion into various analysis tools.
  • You will contribute to a dynamic group culture where community-focused values are maintained through participation in teams and collaborative activities. We emphasize continual improvement, innovation and risk-taking, and strive to create high quality products.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Are pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, or a degree in Physics or Astronomy with a minor in Computer Science.
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
  • Significant programming experience.
  • Have a passion for building tools that help people understand, visualize and analyze complex data sets
  • Have experience in building JavaScript or Python applications
  • To access APL’s facilities and networks, U.S. Citizenship is required

You will go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you…

  • Have experience beyond the classroom in team-based software development, especially in JavaScript or Python
  • Have experience building web applications, either in languages like Java, or in Augmented/Virtual Reality settings
  • Have experience analyzing or processing large amounts of data in Python
  • Have previous internship experience

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
