Job Summary
The 2nd shift Diesel Service Technician provides critical on-site mechanical support and emergency roadside assistance for a fleet of residential and commercial refuse collection vehicles. This role is responsible for responding to vehicle breakdowns in real-time, performing rapid diagnostics, and executing repairs on the side of the road or at landfill sites to ensure trucks can complete their routes safely.
Key Responsibilities
- Emergency Roadside Response: Promptly respond to service calls for stalled or broken-down garbage trucks in various field locations, including residential streets, highways, and disposal facilities.
- On-Site Diagnostics: Utilize mobile diagnostic computers and software to troubleshoot engine malfunctions, electrical faults, and transmission issues on the spot.
- Specialized Systems Repair: Perform emergency repairs on hydraulic systems—including lift arms, packers, and tailgate seals—to ensure trucks can safely dump their loads before being towed or returned to service.
- Mechanical & Brake Repairs: Execute roadside fixes for common failures such as air brake system leaks, tire blowouts, battery failures, and cooling system issues (hoses, thermostats, and radiator leaks).
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Specialized Knowledge: Proficient in hydraulic system troubleshooting and air brake repair.
- Safety Zone Management: Establish and maintain safe work zones around the disabled vehicle, often in high-traffic or narrow urban areas, adhering to all OSHA and DOT safety protocols.
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate electronic records of all field repairs, parts used, and labor hours through fleet maintenance software.
Certifications:
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL Class B or A) with air brakes endorsement preferred but not necessary
- Valid Drivers License with a clean record is a must.
- ASE Medium/Heavy Truck certifications preferred.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to work outdoors in all weather extremes and lift or move objects weighing up to 50-75 lbs.
- Soft Skills: Strong independent problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate effectively with dispatchers and drivers under high-pressure situations.
Working Conditions
- Environment: Work is primarily performed outdoors in all types of weather (rain, snow, heat) and involves exposure to dirt, odors, and noise typical of waste management environments.
- Schedule: 2pm-11pm, Monday-Friday Rotating Saturdays
