https://johnniestudio.com/editorial-director/

The editorial director leads key editorial workstreams for a Johnnie Studio account in the B2B tech space. This client-facing individual will split time between strategic workstream leadership and tactical editing and writing responsibilities. The content under their purview ranges from technical business messaging to longform editorial storytelling.

This individual will oversee work from a team of writers/editors, ensuring strong work quality, processes, and experience for both JS team members and clients. They will collaborate with project managers, strategists, designers, and stakeholders in their day-to-day work, and will partner especially closely with a program manager in their workstream leadership.

The editorial director will report to the senior editorial director and work closely with them to create and maintain the ecosystem of the client’s editorial department by assessing, managing, and executing on both internal and external account needs.

This role may include manager responsibilities, and as such, the editorial director will help to hire and onboard new editorial resources, optimize cross-team operations, manage resourcing, and institute the tools, guidelines, and standards that help their team members work successfully.

Responsibilities

  • Work with client and senior JS team members to ensure successful workstreams and client relationships.
  • Implement and maintain high editorial standards that ensure that all editorial content and process under your purview is top-quality.
  • Lead team members toward a unified vision and provide the tools and oversight necessary to ensure continued success.
  • Seamlessly transition between account leadership and in-the-weeds writing and editing, and know when you are best suited to lean into each.
  • Collaborate with clients, account managers, strategists, designers, and proofreaders/freelance writers to develop and iterate on processes and best practices.
  • Review content to ensure it is compelling, clean, and adheres to both the project requirements, aligns to the respective overarching client style guide, and achieves strategic goals.
  • Manage copywriters, managing editors, and freelance writers to ensure a positive working experience on the project. For any direct reports, regularly check in on, assess, and support their progress, weekly/daily workloads, skill development, job satisfaction, and career goals.
  • Continual development, ownership, and deep understanding of account style guides.
  • Regularly gauge the current and upcoming needs for the account and ensure the team is well positioned to serve them.

What we’re searching for

  • A strategic leader who can prioritize across the account and keep a dual focus on micro and macro initiatives.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • A creative conceptor and leader who can identify and manage editorial needs across the account.
  • Ability to streamline, interpret, and implement feedback from clients and team members.
  • A nimble mind and ability to think one step ahead, solving for problems before they arise.
  • Excellent organizational skills and an eye for consistency across projects.
  • Readiness to dig in, learn complex subject matter, and ensure that all writers and managing editors are prepared with the knowledge and materials they need for successful project execution.
  • Ability to manage writers and support their skill development.
  • A collaborative spirit and a resourceful approach.
