About John Kind Studios

John Kind Studios is a Boston-rooted creative production and strategic partner helping organizations communicate clearly, connect with audiences, and move important work forward.

Our mission is simple: Make what needs to happen, happen.

We produce brand stories, interviews, event films, promotional content, documentary stories, and educational media. We’re seeking equipped videographers who bring strong production skills, initiative, responsiveness, and a collaborative approach.

Mandatory JKS Participation Expectations

Technical ability and equipment are part of the qualifications. Dependable communication and active participation are equally important.

Candidates must:

  • Be responsive. During agreed communication windows, acknowledge project inquiries, crew check-ins, equipment requests, and messages requiring your input within one business day. Communicate clearly when you are unavailable or cannot meet a request.
  • Actively use the network workspace and all shared channels according to their purposes. Review announcements, follow channel guidance, complete required check-ins, contribute to relevant discussions, and keep availability and equipment information current.
  • Show interest in JKS’s mission and organizational culture. We value enthusiasm, cultural awareness, initiative, respect for collaborators, and commitment to the client’s outcome. We’re seeking people who care about building a productive working relationship alongside earning compensation.
  • Handle uncertainty professionally. Opportunities depend on client demand, timing, budget, location, and fit. Projects may change or fall through. Not every opportunity will result in an assignment, and some assignments will go to other crew members.
  • Be comfortable with intermittent freelance income. There may be extended periods without a booked assignment or income from JKS. Joining the network does not guarantee projects, weekly hours, or recurring pay. Accepted work is compensated according to the agreed scope and payment terms.
  • Follow through. Arrive prepared, raise concerns early, meet agreed deadlines, and take responsibility for accepted commitments.

Our working mindset is to communicate clearly, contribute useful solutions, respect the team, and deliver work that helps the client move forward.

Repeated failure to respond, complete required check-ins, or honor accepted commitments may result in removal from the network and consideration for future assignments.

The Role

You’ll collaborate with JKS producers, creative leads, and crew members to capture footage that supports the client’s goals and approved production brief.

Responsibilities include:

  • Review briefs and shot lists, identify technical needs, and arrive prepared.
  • Capture interviews, events, testimonials, B-roll, and promotional footage.
  • Set exposure, focus, white balance, lighting, and audio appropriately.
  • Operate gimbals and tripods to produce intentional, controlled shots.
  • Coordinate with venue staff and audio technicians when needed.
  • Follow creative direction while contributing practical production ideas.
  • Plan framing for the intended horizontal, vertical, or other delivery formats.
  • Protect, organize, back up, and transfer footage within agreed timelines.
  • Communicate scheduling changes, technical concerns, and production issues promptly.
  • Represent JKS professionally with clients, participants, and collaborators.

Required Equipment

Applicants must own a professional core camera kit and have dependable access to additional equipment required for accepted assignments.

Camera System

A professional camera capable of 4K recording, including 60 fps, with 10-bit recording or a professional RAW workflow.

Examples include:

  • Sony FX3/FX3A, FX6, or FX30.
  • Canon Cinema EOS C50, C80, or C400.
  • Blackmagic PYXIS 6K or Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro.
  • Panasonic LUMIX S5IIX.
  • Equivalent professional systems meeting the assignment specifications.

Native 6K or higher recording and open-gate capability are strongly preferred for cinematic and campaign assignments. Specify actual recording resolution, frame rate, codec, and any external recorder required.

Lenses

A lens package covering wide, medium, and close-up compositions. A fast standard zoom, such as a 24–70mm f/2.8 or equivalent field of view, and a suitable prime lens are preferred.

Identify telephoto options available for stage, conference, or sports coverage. Professional lenses from Sony, Canon, Sigma, Tamron, or equivalent manufacturers are welcome.

Stabilization

A motorized gimbal compatible with your assembled camera and lens package, plus a stable fluid-head video tripod.

Examples include DJI RS 5, RS 4 Pro, RS 4, or an equivalent stabilizer. Applicants must demonstrate controlled movement and smooth tracking.

Audio

Dedicated speech-recording equipment, including lavalier microphones, a suitable boom/shotgun microphone, monitoring headphones, and an appropriate recording setup.

Examples include RØDE or Sennheiser microphone systems and Zoom, Tascam, or equivalent field recorders.

Event assignments may require soundboard-feed recording, appropriate adapters, and an independent audio backup.

Lighting

A controllable interview-lighting kit with key and fill capability, diffusion, stands, and appropriate securing equipment.

Aputure/amaran, Godox, or equivalent professional fixtures are suitable examples.

Power, Media, and Delivery

Appropriate ND filters, microphone wind protection, spare batteries, compatible recording media, and a reliable footage backup and transfer setup.

A second camera, external monitor, and timecode/synchronization equipment are preferred. Additional equipment and crew requirements depend on the assignment.

Qualifications

  • A portfolio demonstrating relevant videography or cinematography experience.
  • Strong camera, composition, lighting, and location-audio skills.
  • Demonstrated gimbal operation.
  • Understanding of Log/RAW workflows and efficient footage handoff to editors.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with a production team.
  • Dependable preparation, attendance, communication, and delivery.
  • Ability to reach agreed shoot locations within your stated service area.
  • A respectful, adaptable approach to working with different organizations and communities.

Compensation and Work Arrangement

Compensation starts at $400 per booked shoot day and increases with duration, complexity, responsibilities, and equipment requirements.

Shoot hours, preparation, included equipment, footage delivery, travel arrangements, and additional charges are agreed in writing before booking. Editing is separately scoped and compensated when required.

Work takes place at client shoot locations throughout New England. There is no fixed office reporting location. Ongoing hours and assignment frequency are not guaranteed.

How to Apply

Apply through Indeed with:

  • Your résumé or a short summary of relevant experience.
  • Portfolio examples showing an interview with clean dialogue, controlled gimbal movement, and event or brand-story coverage.
  • Your specific role on each submitted example.
  • Your home base, travel radius, and general availability.
  • An equipment inventory with makes and models, distinguishing owned equipment from borrowed or rental access.
  • Any additional kit or rental charges.
  • Your backup plan if essential equipment fails.
  • Why you’re interested in JKS and how you would contribute to its working culture.
  • Confirmation that you understand the participation expectations and intermittent nature of the work.
