Joey’s Auto Shop has been in Des Moines for 14 years. Joey built the shop after working in places where repairs weren’t communicated properly and recommendations were changed or missed. This shop was built to do the work the right way and make sure the person doing the work is set up to succeed.

This role is focused on diagnostics and repair. The way the shop is structured, the way work is assigned, and how the day is planned are all built around keeping the right work in front of you so you can stay productive.

Pay

• $95,000 - $110,000
• base (salary) plus commission (percent of labor dollars sold)

This is a production-based environment, but you’re not chasing work or fighting for hours. The work is there and set up to move.

Schedule

• Monday–Friday
• 8:00–4:30
• Shop closes at 5
• No nights or weekends

How the Work Is Set Up

Every vehicle goes through a detailed digital inspection first.

That inspection builds the story and drives the work.

Inspections, maintenance, and initial findings are handled up front so when work gets to you, it’s already documented and ready to move forward.

You’re not handling every step of the process on every car.

Your role is to diagnose, make the call, and carry the repair through the right way.

Production

This shop is set up so a strong technician can actually produce.

Work is distributed based on skill level and strengths. Diagnostics and repair work stay in front of you, while inspection and maintenance work continue feeding the schedule.

It’s common for experienced technicians here to run 40 billed hours consistently because the workflow supports it.

If inspection volume drives more work than one person can handle, it gets redistributed so the day stays realistic and customers are taken care of.

The Work

• Diagnostics and drivability concerns
• Electrical and network systems
• Mechanical repair

Work mix is roughly:

• 55% repair
• 30% diagnostics
• 15% maintenance

There is a strong mix of European vehicles along with domestic and Asian. You need to be comfortable working across all makes, with European work being a consistent part of the schedule.

Everything is OBDII and newer.

What the Day Looks Like

• Morning meeting to go through the schedule and assign work
• Most vehicles are drop-offs
• Once you’re into a job, you’re able to stay on it and finish it

If something is going to take longer than expected, the customer is updated and the plan is adjusted. You’re not being pushed to rush through work just to hit a number.

Equipment & Capability

• Snap-On, Autologic, Autoland, Launch
• Factory VW/Audi tooling
• Programming capability in-house
• Oscilloscope

If something is needed to do the job correctly, it gets purchased.

The Shop

• 9 bays / 8 hoists
• Built in 2019
• Clean, organized facility
• Tekmetric shop management system

We Are Looking For Someone Who:

• Performs basic checks (battery, starter, alternator)
• Retrieves codes and follows guided procedures
• Uses scan data to support repair decisions
• Performs electrical testing using DVOM and wiring diagrams
• Diagnoses drivability concerns
• Diagnoses intermittent or complex concerns
• Uses advanced tools (oscilloscope, pressure transducers, etc.) we are working as a team to learn the Oscilloscope tool, you do not need to be an expert but we are looking for someone eager to learn it.

There’s an expectation around how people show up. Do your job, communicate clearly, and be someone the team can rely on.

Standards are consistent across the team. If someone isn’t contributing or is bringing the wrong attitude into the shop, it gets addressed.

The team works toward the day, the week, and the month together. No ego, no one working against each other.
