Learning Technology Manager

Joby Aviation
Santa Cruz, CA Full Time
POSTED ON 11/26/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 1/28/2026
Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onward toward certifying the Joby aircraft, scaling our manufacturing, and launching our initial commercial service.

Overview

Joby is searching for a Learning Technology Manager to own the strategy, development, and management of our learning technology platform, centered on our highly customized Totara LMS. This is a strategic opportunity to own and execute the long-term vision for our core learning platform as it scales with Joby’s growth. You will be the primary strategist responsible for ensuring our learning system not only meets the rigorous training and compliance needs of the aviation and manufacturing industries but also provides a world-class experience for all employees.

The ideal candidate is a proactive, strategic thinker who excels at translating complex business requirements into robust custom functionalities and configurations within Totara. You will be responsible for both the hands-on architectural ownership of the platform and the strategic vision required to meet the learning technology needs for our vertically integrated business. This position may be based in Marina, Santa Cruz, or San Carlos, CA.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive multi-year roadmap for Joby’s Totara learning platform, ensuring it evolves to meet future business and learning needs through strategic configuration and custom development.
  • Establish and enforce a robust governance model for the platform, creating standards for content development, data integrity, security protocols, and user experience.
  • Lead the evaluation, selection, and implementation of new modules, plugins, and integrated tools that enhance the Totara platform's capabilities.
  • Serve as the architect for the Totara platform, leading all advanced technical configuration, overseeing custom development projects, and managing critical integrations with other business systems (e.g., HRIS, ERP, Single Sign-On).
  • Manage key relationships with IT, People, and internal/external development teams to ensure seamless data flow, system security, and architectural alignment.
  • Manage the full technology lifecycle, from business case development and vendor selection to overseeing system upgrades, testing, and release cycles.
  • Act as a strategic partner and internal consultant to the training team and business leaders. Translate complex regulatory and operational training needs in aviation, manufacturing, and safety into scalable and effective technology solutions within the Totara framework.
  • Define and manage a learning analytics strategy to measure and report on training effectiveness, compliance, and business impact. Create dashboards and reports for leadership that provide actionable insights.
  • Continuously monitor system performance and user feedback to proactively identify and implement improvements that enhance both the learner journey and administrative efficiency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Instructional Technology, or a relevant field or 8 years of relevant experience.
  • 5 years of progressive experience in learning technology, with demonstrated experience in a strategic system ownership or architectural role.
  • Proven track record of leading complex technology projects, including at least one full-cycle system implementation, migration, or major integration.
  • Demonstrated experience managing custom development projects or serving as a product owner/key stakeholder for a development team.
  • Experience in architecting and managing system integrations via APIs and flat-file data exchange.
  • Experience in a formal or informal leadership role, with a proven ability to guide technical projects and mentor team members.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.

Desired

  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Prior people leadership experience.
  • Experience in a highly regulated industry such as aviation, manufacturing, or biotechnology.
  • Familiarity with Totara's plugin architecture and the technical components of web-based learning platforms (e.g., PHP, SQL, APIs).
  • Strong understanding of instructional design principles and modern learning methodologies (SCORM, xAPI, Blended Learning).
