Summary
The Mainframe Systems Engineer is responsible for managing, configuring, and maintaining enterprise mainframe environments to ensure high availability, performance, and reliability. This role requires deep expertise in z/OS systems programming, strong troubleshooting skills, and the ability to lead technical upgrades, integrations, and system-wide enhancements. On-call support is required.
Responsibilities
- Administer and support mainframe environments including z/OS, OS/390, MVS, and zVSE.
- Design and manage mainframe hardware configurations such as FICON, ESCON, OSA, and LCSS.
- Utilize IOCP, HCD, HCM, and HMC for UNIPLEX, LPAR, and SYSPLEX configuration and management.
- Perform SMP/E installation, maintenance, upgrades, and customization for operating system components.
- Plan and execute hardware and software upgrades, configuration changes, and environment refreshes.
- Automate operational processes and support capacity planning efforts.
- Install new system components, run installation jobs and scripts, and perform installation-specific customizations.
- Conduct integration testing to validate compatibility with existing applications, tools, and procedures.
- Tune system performance to meet service levels across platforms and enterprise workloads.
- Provide Tier 3 operational support, diagnosing and resolving complex hardware, software, and system outages.
- Monitor automated alerts, respond to system-level events, and recommend improvements to monitoring tools.
- Coordinate issue resolution with IT teams across platforms, ensuring alignment and timely communication.
- Install, test, and evaluate vendor software, patches, and upgrades; identify workarounds and product issues.
- Train and mentor junior system engineers, review their work, and contribute to developing engineering standards.
- Create and update documentation, including policies, procedures, and change records in ServiceNow (Incident, Problem, and Change Management).
- Analyze system performance, identify trends, and recommend opportunities for automation and optimization.
- Participate in change management processes, provide technical input, and present system metrics and project updates.
- Extensive experience in mainframe systems programming and enterprise-scale mainframe environments.
- Proficiency with z/OS, OS/390, MVS, zVSE, and associated hardware and configuration tools.
- Deep knowledge of SMP/E, LPARs, SYSPLEX, and mainframe hardware infrastructure.
- Strong troubleshooting and Tier 3 support experience in complex, multi-platform environments.
- Experience creating, tuning, and maintaining highly available mainframe systems.
- Strong communication skills with ability to train staff, mentor team members, and collaborate across IT organizations.
- Ability to participate in 24/7 on-call rotation.
