  • Strong foundation in solid mechanics (most critical).
  • Hands‑on experience with finite element analysis (FEA) – including modeling, boundary value problems, PDEs/ODEs.
  • Experience with commercial FEA tools such as:
    • ANSYS
    • Abaqus
    • LS-Dyna
  • Experience using (or exposure to) open‑source FEA codes, examples include:
    • MOOSE
    • Code_Aster
    • CalculiX
    • MATLAB-based custom solvers
  • Familiarity with physical testing methods (stress/strain characterization), even though the role is modeling focused.

Purpose of the Position:

As a Scientist/Engineer, you are responsible for modeling of new processes and/or process conditions for improved product attributes or reduced cost for glass and/or ceramic substrates and filters. You will be expected to develop modeling/analytical tools or utilizing existing tools to gain fundamental understanding of underlying principles. You need a strong foundation in solid mechanics and a high level of expertise in numerical modeling. Our team requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with globally distributed researchers, engineers in our commercial organizations and customers. The Process Simulation Engineer supports Corning’s modeling group by conducting advanced solid mechanics modeling and simulation to improve product reliability and process understanding. The engineer will translate real-world loads, tests, and forming processes into mathematical and computational models using finite element analysis (FEA) tools. Outputs of the analyses will help predict stresses, strains, deformation, process feasibility, and product reliability across various applications (consumer electronics, automotive glazing, etc.). The role collaborates closely with testing and characterization teams but remains primarily modeling focused.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • In this role, you will be responsible for modeling of new processes and/or process conditions for improved product attributes or reduced cost for glass and/or ceramic substrates and filters with an expectation of developing modeling/ analytical tools or utilizing existing tools to gain fundamental understanding of underlying principles.
  • You should have a strong foundation in solid mechanics and a high level of expertise in numerical modeling.
  • This position requires you to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with globally distributed researchers, engineers in our commercial organizations, and customers.

Job Duties:

  • Utilizing thin films modeling to understand the product performance and response to various sources of lading
  • Utilizing modeling such as FEA and BEM for product development, designs improvements, manufacturing processes, and failure analysis
  • Mentorship and recommendation on new capabilities or method developments related to mechanical testing and measurements
  • Lead and recommend product testing pertaining to product design and performance to meet qualification requirements from commercial, engineering manufacturing.
  • Engage with the businesses as needed to help with addressing thin films concerns/questions from customers and other product engineering related problems.
