Hi,
senior DevOps Engineer
Work Location: Remote with periodic on-site presence at CLIENT System Administration, Albany, NY as needed
Anticipated Duration: Initial engagement of 12 months, with option to extend based on program needs and performance
Required Qualifications
- 7 or more years of experience in DevOps, platform engineering, or cloud infrastructure roles, with demonstrated work in enterprise or higher education environments
- Hands-on experience across at least two of the three primary platforms in scope: AWS, Google Cloud Platform, and Azure, including IaaS, PaaS, and managed service configurations
- Demonstrated experience with cloud cost governance, including spend visibility tooling, tagging and attribution practices, and optimization across cloud provider environments
- Experience with containerization technologies including Docker and Kubernetes, and with infrastructure-as-code tooling such as Terraform or equivalent
- Demonstrated experience establishing CI/CD pipelines, release management practices, and change control processes in production environments
- Experience defining and documenting operational models including monitoring, alerting, incident response, and service handoff procedures
- Familiarity with integration patterns for enterprise systems including identity providers, student information systems, and financial platforms
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders
- Experience working in multi-vendor, multi-partner delivery environments with shared operational responsibility
- Experience in higher education IT or similarly federated, multi-institutional technology environments
- Familiarity with Client technology procurement and compliance requirements, including OSC and ITS standards
- Experience supporting AI or machine learning platform infrastructure, particularly on Google Cloud Platform
- Experience supporting cloud adoption programs across distributed or decentralized organizational structures
- Experience supporting security operations, log management, or SOC environments
- Relevant cloud certifications (AWS Solutions Architect, Google Professional Cloud Architect, Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect, or equivalent)
- Experience with SaaS platform evaluation and vendor technical due diligence
Cloud Infrastructure and Architecture
- Evaluate and document production architecture decisions across AWS, Google Cloud Platform, and Azure environments, ensuring designs are appropriate for intended scale and consistent with CLIENT standards
- Translate architectural discussions into clear, supportable production models with documented configuration, dependency, and operational assumptions
- Assess infrastructure proposals from vendors and implementation partners, identifying gaps in supportability, scalability, or security posture before CLIENT acceptance
- Support cloud migration efforts, ensuring workloads are optimized for cloud-native operation rather than replicated from on-premises patterns
- Establish and maintain cost visibility practices across AWS, Google Cloud Platform, and Azure environments, including tagging standards, budget alerting, and spend attribution
- Identify optimization opportunities in active cloud environments, including right-sizing, reserved capacity planning, and elimination of idle or underutilized resources
- Support the development of cloud governance frameworks that allow campus adoption to scale without creating uncontrolled spend or ungoverned configurations
- Define and document operating models for supported initiatives, including monitoring strategy, routine maintenance procedures, backup and retention expectations, and escalation paths
- Establish incident response baselines appropriate to the sensitivity and criticality of each system
- Develop operational runbooks and handoff documentation that enable CLIENT staff to sustain services after initial deployment
- Define consistent integration patterns for initiatives connecting to campus and enterprise systems, reducing one-off engineering and improving maintainability across a federated campus environment
- Build and document repeatable deployment and rollout playbooks for initiatives with multi-campus distribution requirements, including defined steps, roles, verification checkpoints, and handoff criteria
- Ensure integration approaches are testable and auditable, particularly for systems handling student, financial, or identity data
- Support the operational build-out of the CLIENT AI Platform on Google Cloud Platform, including infrastructure configuration, service integration, access controls, and ongoing operational practices
- Establish DevOps foundations for AI and emerging technology initiatives, ensuring platforms built for research or pilot use are structured for reliable, scalable operation
- Collaborate with platform, data, and academic technology teams to ensure AI infrastructure is maintainable and consistent with system-wide standards
- Serve as a technical advisor to CLIENT in evaluating SaaS provider and implementation partner proposals and deliverables
- Set clear technical expectations with vendors at project outset and validate that delivered solutions meet those expectations before acceptance
- Identify risks in vendor-proposed architectures or operating models and recommend mitigations
- Work alongside CLIENT''s existing DevOps staff, contributing to active delivery while building internal capability
- Document decisions, practices, and standards in a form that transfers knowledge to CLIENT staff rather than creating consulting dependency
- Participate in project and program-level meetings as a technical contributor and advisor
