We are a growing, design-build mechanical contractor with a long-standing reputation in the Upper Midwest, supporting complex HVAC, plumbing, and process piping systems across a wide range of industries including healthcare, higher education, multifamily, industrial, and commercial sectors. Over the past decade, the business has scaled significantly, both in team size and project complexity, and continues to expand into new markets while maintaining strong roots in core sectors.

The company operates with in-house engineering capabilities, allowing for greater control over design quality and execution, and works closely across design, field, and preconstruction teams. Leadership is accessible, hands-on, and focused on long-term growth, both for the business and the people within it.

Why join us?

  • Clear path to leadership as the engineering team continues to grow
  • Exposure to a wide range of project types across multiple industries
  • Ability to work closely with field teams and see designs come to life
  • Stable, established company with strong growth trajectory
  • Autonomy in your role with support from experienced leadership
  • Opportunity to mentor and shape junior engineering talent
  • Flexible environment with practical understanding of work-life needs

Job Details

This is a newly created Lead Mechanical Engineer position focused on HVAC systems, designed to support the continued growth of the engineering team and provide leadership bandwidth to an existing senior team member.

This role blends hands-on engineering with light leadership. You will take ownership of projects from concept through construction while helping guide and develop a junior design team. You will not be responsible for formal people management (hiring/firing), but you will play a critical role in mentoring, reviewing work, and helping elevate the team.

You will work across a wide range of project types and complexity levels, from straightforward commercial scopes to highly technical healthcare, laboratory, and industrial environments.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering & Design Leadership

  • Lead the design of HVAC and mechanical systems including system selection, equipment sizing, load calculations, and layout development
  • Develop and review construction documents, ensuring accuracy, coordination, and constructability
  • Apply sound engineering judgment in fast-paced environments where project details may evolve

Project Ownership

  • Own engineering deliverables from early concept and design through construction closeout
  • Participate in project meetings, providing technical input and representing the engineering function
  • Support preconstruction efforts including scope development, system recommendations, and pricing alignment

Construction Support

  • Review submittals, respond to RFIs, and assist with change order evaluations
  • Maintain design intent throughout construction and support field teams with technical problem-solving
  • Conduct site visits for project scoping, coordination, and troubleshooting

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with project managers, estimators, purchasing, and field teams to ensure alignment
  • Partner with VDC/BIM teams to ensure designs are properly translated into coordination and fabrication models
  • Interface with external stakeholders including owners, architects, and trade partners

Team Development

  • Mentor and guide junior engineers and designers, providing technical oversight and coaching
  • Review work for quality and consistency, helping to elevate overall team performance
  • Support knowledge sharing and development within the engineering group

What You'll Work On

This role offers exposure to a broad mix of projects, including:

  • Multifamily developments ranging from affordable housing to market-rate communities
  • Healthcare and clinical environments with complex MEP requirements
  • Higher education and laboratory spaces with specialized systems and controls
  • Industrial and process piping projects requiring coordination in active facilities
  • Hospitality and commercial projects including restaurants, hotels, and entertainment venues

What We're Looking For

Experience & Technical Skills

  • 5-10 years of HVAC/mechanical systems design experience
  • Strong understanding of commercial HVAC systems, including airside and hydronic systems
  • Experience with design tools such as Revit and AutoCAD
  • Familiarity with load calculation software (Trane Trace, HAP, or similar)

Leadership & Ownership

  • Demonstrated experience leading projects or mentoring junior staff
  • Ability to take ownership of work and operate independently
  • Comfortable stepping into a leadership presence without needing formal authority

Work Style & Mindset

  • Adaptable and comfortable working in environments where not everything is fully defined
  • Strong communicator who can work across teams and with external stakeholders
  • Motivated, curious, and willing to grow with the business

Nice to Have

  • EIT or PE (not required)
  • Experience in design-build environments
  • Exposure to multiple sectors (healthcare, industrial, multifamily, etc.)

Work Environment

  • Primarily onsite to support collaboration and team development
  • Flexibility for real-life needs (weather, family, etc.)
  • Typical hours around 8-5 with some variability depending on project needs
  • Hands-on, collaborative environment with direct access to leadership
  • EOS-driven structure with focus on accountability and growth
