BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

Examine, diagnose, and provide clinical services for patients who may or do have a communication disorder or swallowing disorders, including those of a highly complex and unusual nature.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Select, administer, and interpret appropriate diagnostic and/or clinical procedures to provide for differential diagnosis of patients' communication and swallowing status.

  • Plan, direct, conduct or participate in complex habilitative and rehabilitative programs including counseling, guidance and clinical work regarding the patient’s communication and swallowing.

  • Coordinate diagnostic results with those from other professions, such as educational, medical, social, and behavioral information.

  • Predict potential benefit to patient from clinical work.

  • Initiate and maintain functional, comprehensive records concerning each patient.

  • Provide information to other professionals regarding status and program needs of patients to facilitate continuity of services.

  • Counsel patients, families and others concerning the management of the patient's communication disorder including the social and psychological problems associated with it.

  • Instruct and supervise graduate students in speech pathology and audiology.

  • Train individuals in other professions in speech pathology techniques and procedures.

  • Train, schedule, assign and evaluate work of support staff.

  • Participate in service training programs in speech pathology and/or related professions.

  • Participate in research to develop diagnostic and remedial techniques and procedures for communication disorders and other research pertaining to communication processes.

  • Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and the public.

  • Establish and maintain standards of collaborative interaction among peers and employees that is characterized by respect, honesty, and service; assure that all unit members are held to similar standards and ethics; constructively manages conflict.

  • Inspire and motivate others to high performance by exercising strong stewardship of University resources, setting expectations, measuring success through individual performance evaluations, and driving organizational results.

  • Identify opportunities for and creates development plans that encourage employees to attend to the growth of their personal and professional capacity; engage self and staff in collective reflection of the University’s greater role in society.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Master's degree in Speech Pathology is required.

  • Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Pathology issued by the American Boards of Examiners in Speech Pathology and Audiology of the American Speech and Hearing Association or qualifications equivalent to such certification is required.

  • Considerable (3-5 years) directly related experience in Speech Pathology is required; preferably in a medical setting.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

  • An individual is considered to possess such equivalent qualifications if s/he meets the academic, practicum and supervised experience requirements for certification and has achieved an acceptable score on the National Examination in Speech Pathology.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience performing videofluoroscopic swallow studies/oropharyngeal motility studies for the evaluation of swallowing is required.

  • Experience providing speech-language pathology services in an medical setting is required.

  • Experience evaluating and treating patients with neurogenic communication and swallowing disorders is required.

  • Certification in Modified Barium Swallow Impairment Profile (MBSImP) is desired.

  • Experience with electronic medical record is strongly desired.

  • Experience evaluating and treating communication and swallowing disorders in adult patients with tracheostomy/mechanical ventilation including tracheostomy speaking valves is desired.

  • Experience providing services to patients in need of augmentative and alternative communication is desired.

  • Experience performing fiberoptic endoscopic assessment of patients with swallowing disorders is desired.

  • Experience teaching and lecturing graduate students in speech-language pathology and resident physicians is desired.
