The Staff Attorney will collaborate closely with the Primary Attorney and coordinate with the Legal Team Supervisor on administrative matters. Compensation will be based on experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive yet efficient in-person and telephonic consultations, focusing on family-based petitions, consular processing, naturalization, derived/acquired citizenship, inadmissibility waivers, humanitarian visas (VAWA/T/U visas), I-751 waivers, Special Immigrant Juvenile visas, and other types of immigration relief.
- Represent clients before USCIS, consular offices, state courts, and occasionally immigration courts.
- Develop strategies and prepare clients/witnesses for court/USCIS testimony.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of complex immigration issues, particularly those related to inadmissibility and removability, and stay updated on changes in immigration law. Clearly communicate relevant updates to both clients and support staff.
- Conduct legal research and prepare motions, pleadings, and briefs.
- Review FOIA results and clearly communicate key findings to clients.
- Examine client declarations and psychological evaluations for accuracy, compliance, and thoroughness. Provide timely feedback to psychologists and declaration writers as needed.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for existing clients’ legal inquiries, consulting with the Primary Attorney only when necessary.
- Offer guidance to paralegals and other staff members, contributing to a collaborative and educational work environment.
- Coordinate with the Case Review Specialist who will review most routine cases submitted by paralegals. When cases involve inadmissibility, criminal issues, or other complexities, the Specialist will refer them to you for further legal analysis. Timely review and respond to these referrals to ensure efficient case progression.
- Efficiently manage workload to meet performance metrics, including consultation-to-prospective-client retention goals.
- Follow firm protocols and metrics in connection with client consultations.
Qualifications
- J.D. from an accredited law school (Texas preferred but not required)
- Active bar license and in good standing
- Proficiency in Spanish
- Demonstrated commitment to immigration law and social justice
- Strong legal research and writing skills
- Excellent interpersonal and client communication abilities
- Proven ability to manage a high-volume caseload
- Comfort with case management technology
