The Veterinary Medical Director will lead the Veterinary team by setting the standard for high-quality and compassionate care. This role requires confidence in making sound medical decisions, the ability to thrive in a fast-paced and collaborative environment and demonstrate strong communication and leadership skills. The Veterinary Medical Director will be responsible for mentoring veterinarians, upholding medical protocols and working closely with leadership to ensure both clinical excellence and a supportive, values-driven workplace culture. This individual will create a team environment rooted in empathy, self-care and professional boundaries to promote the well-being of both patients and staff.


Essential Responsibilities

  • Delivers compassionate, personalized care to pets and their families, ensuring a consistently positive experience for every patient and client
  • Diagnoses and treats medical conditions; performs soft tissue surgery and dentistry; administers core and lifestyle vaccinations in accordance with current medical standards
  • Establishes and oversees high medical and surgical standards, including diagnostics, treatment planning, anesthesia, pain management, sterile technique, intra-operative monitoring, recovery, post-operative care, and case management
  • Promotes preventive medicine through proactive client education, wellness counseling, and evidence-based recommendations
  • Monitors medical and surgical outcomes, complication rates, and protocol compliance; leads case reviews, quality assurance efforts, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Provides leadership, mentorship, and professional guidance to DVMs, fostering a collaborative, accountable, and growth-oriented culture
  • Guides veterinarians and staff on complex, high-risk, or sensitive cases and serves as a medical resource for client concerns and escalations
  • Sets clear expectations for medical quality, professionalism, communication, and teamwork among DVMs; supports performance management, feedback, and ongoing development
  • Partners closely with the Hospital Administrator to align medical standards, staffing, and service offerings with operational priorities and business objectives
  • Supports sustainable financial performance by managing medical-related expenses, evaluating equipment and supply needs, supporting pricing and service mix decisions, and promoting appropriate utilization of diagnostics and treatments
  • Reviews and analyzes key medical and financial indicators (e.g., case mix, compliance, surgical performance, medical revenue drivers) to inform decision-making and improve hospital performance
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable regulatory, ethical, and safety standards, including OSHA, DEA, state veterinary regulations, and AAHA accreditation standards (if applicable)
  • Contributes to and models a positive, supportive, and professional work environment for staff, clients, and patients
  • Provides medical leadership during urgent or emergency situations, including assisting with emergency procedures and coordinating or participating in animal evacuation when necessary
  • Creates, maintains and reviews SOP's on an ongoing basis

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of clinical veterinary experience, including leadership or mentoring roles
  • Strong diagnostic and communication skills with a client focused approach
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team-oriented environment
  • Commitment to continued learning and staying current with advancements in veterinary medicine and technology
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills with the ability to mentor and develop veterinary staff
  • Has a working knowledge of medical protocols and compliance standards
  • Passionate about animal welfare; treats all animals with kindness and respect


Education and Licensure

  • Degree: DVM, VMD or other AVMA approved equivalent
  • Licensure in good standing in the state of Massachusetts or ability to get licensure in MA
