Breakdown

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING (Broadway)

Actively seeking diversity of every kind and in every role; trans, gender non-conforming, and actors with disabilities of every ethnicity are encouraged to audition.

SEEKING:

UNDERSTUDY (CLAUDIO and BORACHIO): CLAUDIO: Male, Late 20s-Early 30s, BIPOC. A young, impetuous soldier who falls instantly for Hero but is easily manipulated into believing she is unfaithful. His quickness to shame her publicly marks him as a naive and sometimes shallow. BORACHIO: Male, Late 20s-Early 30s, BIPOC. Don John’s primary henchman who devises the plan to slander Hero by using his relationship with Margaret.

UNDERSTUDY (MARGARET): MARGARET: Non-Binary or Trans, Late 20s-Early 30s. Margaret is a witty and flirtatious attendant to Hero, known for having a sharp tongue and the ability to hold their own in verbal sparring. Though ultimately innocent of any malicious intent, Margaret’s romantic relationship with Borachio leads to inadvertently playing a central role in the plot to ruin Hero’s reputation. NOTE: This is a singing role, so must have a strong singing voice.

ROLES ALREADY CAST:

BENEDICK: CAST. Male, 40s. A witty soldier and self-proclaimed "confirmed bachelor" who is a close companion to Don Pedro. Like Beatrice, he is manipulated by his friends into falling in love and abandoning his cynical view of romance.

BEATRICE: CAST. Female, 40s. Leonato’s sharp-tongued niece who wages a "merry war" of wits against Benedick. Though she scorns marriage initially, she is eventually tricked into admitting her love for him.

HERO: CAST. Female, 20s, BIPOC. Leonato’s gentle and dutiful daughter who is the primary target of Don John’s villainous plot. After being falsely accused of infidelity at her own wedding, she must feign death to eventually clear her name.

BORACHIO: CAST. Male, Late 20s-Early 30s, BIPOC. Don John’s primary henchman who devises the plan to slander Hero by using his relationship with Margaret.

DON PEDRO: CAST. Male, 50s. The influential Prince of Aragon who acts as a benevolent, if sometimes misguided, matchmaker for his friends. While he orchestrates the play's happy endings, he is also easily deceived by his brother's lies.

LEONATO: CAST. Male, Late 50s-Early 60s. The Governor of Messina and respected host whose home serves as the setting for the play. He is a father figure who initially sides against his daughter when her honor is questioned.

FRIAR FRANCIS: CAST. Male, 30s, BIPOC. The priest who presides over the failed wedding and is the first to suspect Hero’s innocence. He devises the plan for Hero to fake her death to uncover the truth.

MARGARET: CAST. Non-Binary or Trans, Late 20s-Early 30s.

CLAUDIO: CAST. Male, Late 20s-Early 30s, BIPOC. A young, impetuous soldier who falls instantly for Hero but is easily manipulated into believing she is unfaithful. His quickness to shame her publicly marks him as a naive and sometimes shallow.

DON JOHN: CAST. Male, Late 40s. The "Bastard Prince" and illegitimate brother of Don Pedro who serves as the play's antagonist. Motivated by envy, he creates a dark scheme to ruin Hero and Claudio’s happiness.
