Paralegal – Immigration Legal Services
Class: Full-Time/Exempt
Salary: $60,000- $67,000
Location: In-person only- Norwich, CT
Reports to: Director of Immigration and Legal Services
Position Summary:
The Paralegal will support the Immigration Legal Services team in delivering comprehensive and client-centered immigration legal assistance. This position plays a key role in case preparation, client communication, and administrative support to ensure efficient and effective delivery of legal services. The Paralegal must be fluent in Spanish or Haitian Creole, with the ability to speak, read, and write proficiently in one of these languages to communicate effectively with clients and complete legal documentation. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, compassionate, and committed to social justice and the mission of JFS.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist attorneys and accredited representatives with preparation, filing, and tracking of immigration applications and petitions (e.g., family-based petitions, naturalization, adjustment of status, asylum, DACA, TPS, etc.).
- Conduct client intakes, interviews, and document collection to assess eligibility for immigration benefits.
- Draft cover letters, client declarations, and legal forms under attorney supervision.
- Maintain organized client case files (physical and digital) in compliance with confidentiality and data protection standards.
- Communicate with clients regarding case status, requests for additional documentation, and scheduling of appointments.
- Conduct research on immigration laws, policies, and country conditions as needed.
- Translate and interpret documents and client communications as needed (Spanish or Haitian Creole).
- Provide administrative support including database entry, report preparation, and case management updates.
- Participate in community outreach and education events related to immigration legal services.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission and goals of JFS.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent paralegal training or certification.
- At least 1–2 years of experience in immigration law, legal services, or a related nonprofit setting.
- Strong understanding of U.S. immigration forms, procedures, and terminology.
- Fluency in Spanish or Haitian Creole (must be able to speak, read, and write proficiently).
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish or Haitian Creole.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, client-centered environment.
- Commitment to cultural humility, diversity, and inclusion.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and case management software.
Preferred:
- Experience working in a non-profit or community-based organization.
- Familiarity with DOJ-recognized organizations and immigration legal services accreditation process.
