Jewish Peninsula (The “J”) is a dedicated non-profit organization focused on promoting a vibrant community where everyone is welcome. We are looking for a motivated, detail-oriented, and mission-driven Controller to manage all of the financial processes of the organization.

About the Role

The Controller is responsible for overseeing the financial operations of the Jewish Community Center, its affiliated Endowment Fund, and an additional related Jewish nonprofit organization. This position ensures accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, and effective stewardship of each organization's financial resources. The Controller works closely with executive leadership, finance committees, and boards to provide strategic financial guidance and support the mission of each organization.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee all accounting functions for the Jewish Community Center, affiliated Endowment Fund, and related nonprofit organization.
• Maintain separate general ledgers and financial records while ensuring consistency in accounting practices across organizations.
• Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for each entity.
• Manage annual budgets and forecasts in collaboration with leadership.
• Oversee cash management, investments, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and fixed assets, as applicable.
• Coordinate the audits and prepare all supporting schedules for external auditors, and documentation for external tax preparer.
• Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, IRS regulations, grant requirements, and applicable federal and state regulations.
• Oversee fund accounting, including donor-restricted funds, endowment assets, and designated funds.
• Prepare financial reports for executive leadership, finance committees, investment committees, and Boards of Directors.
• Monitor endowment activity, including gifts, distributions, investment transfers, and reconciliations with investment managers and custodians.
• Develop, maintain, and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures across all entities.
• Supervise accounting staff and provide leadership, mentoring, and professional development.
• Partner with organizational leadership on financial planning, risk management, and long-term strategic initiatives.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required (CPA preferred).
• Five to eight years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including supervisory experience.
• Significant nonprofit accounting experience required; experience with foundations or endowment accounting strongly preferred.
• Thorough knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit fund accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls.
• Experience managing audits and preparing IRS Form 990 support.
• Advanced proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
• Excellent organizational, analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage multiple organizations, competing priorities, and confidential information with exceptional attention to detail.

Preferred Experience

• Experience working with nonprofit Boards of Directors, Finance Committees, and Investment Committees.
• Familiarity with donor-restricted funds, planned giving, and endowment administration.
• Experience supporting organizations with multiple legal entities or affiliated organizations.
• Appreciation for the mission, values, and community served by Jewish communal organizations.
