The Archivist is responsible for the management, preservation, and accessibility of the NJHS collections and archives by conservation, cataloging, digitizing, and exhibition planning, to ensure the integrity and value of the history of the Jewish family heritage, including business and social histories of the Jewish Communities of Nebraska and Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Primary Purpose of Job:
Archival Management & Preservation
· Collect, evaluate, and preserve physical and digital materials of historical value.
· Develop and implement archival policies, procedures, and retention schedules.
· Organize, catalog, and maintain archival collections using appropriate metadata standards.
· Ensure proper storage conditions for materials, including environmental controls and preservation techniques.
· Digitize materials and manage digital asset systems to ensure long-term accessibility.
Records Management
· Collaborate with departments to ensure proper transfer, storage, and archiving of records.
· Provide guidance on retention schedules and best practices for records management.
· Review incoming materials for long-term preservation, relevance, and compliance.
Access, Research & Support
· Assist staff, researchers, and community members in accessing archival materials.
· Respond to internal and external research requests in a timely and professional manner.
· Prepare materials for exhibits, presentations, publications, and organizational storytelling.
· Manage archival reference requests and maintain tracking systems for material usage.
Digital Asset & Database Administration
· Maintain archival databases and digital cataloging systems.
· Oversee digitization workflows, file organization, metadata creation, and file access permissions.
· Ensure digital preservation standards—including backup, migration, and security—are upheld.
Community Engagement & Storytelling
· Support organizational initiatives by providing historical content for programs, marketing, and development.
· Assist with educational programming, tours, or presentations related to the organization's history.
· Identify opportunities to highlight archival materials for community engagement.
Operational & Administrative Duties
· Maintain documentation of archival procedures, inventory records, and metadata standards.
· Develop and implement project plans for large-scale digitization or preservation initiatives.
· Oversee archival supplies and budget needs.
· Reliable and predictable attendance.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
· Bachelor’s degree in history, Art History, or Museum Studies preferred.
· Two to four years of professional archival, records management, museum, or library experience preferred.

This position may require some time out of the office, limited travel, and active participation in programs that occur outside of a traditional work schedule.
