Overview
Jewish Family Services of Greater Hartford (JFS) is seeking a Controller. Reporting directly to the CEO and a member of the Management Team, the Controller participates in the leadership of the organization and works collaboratively with the team to align financial processes with the organization’s strategic goals, directly contributing to long-term sustainability. This critical role ensures the overall financial health and integrity of the organization by taking full ownership of the accounting function, including:
- Financial Leadership: Managing and mentoring a finance team of approximately 2.5 FTEs, ensuring effective delegation, review, and accountability for all transactional processing, disbursements, and receipts. Acts as staff liaison to Board of Directors.
- Reporting & Compliance: Driving accurate and timely preparation of all financial reporting, maintaining the integrity of all financial accounts, and developing robust internal controls.
- Strategic Oversight: Participating in the annual budgeting process and providing in-depth financial analysis essential for company-wide strategic planning and decision-making.
- Audit Management: Serving as the key liaison for independent auditors and directing the preparation of all necessary materials for the annual audit and tax filings (including Form 990).

Position Title: Controller
Position Type: Full-time, Exempt
Reports to: Chief Executive Officer
Salary range: $100,000 to $130,000 annually, commensurate with experience
Location: West Hartford, CT, Hybrid work schedule negotiable
Responsibility and Expectations
- Own the entire financial reporting process, preparing and distributing accurate monthly financial statements with supporting financial analysis for departmental leaders and management.
- Partner with CEO and COO to prepare, oversee, and manage the annual operating budget, including continuous budget forecasting and variance analysis.
- Serve as the primary liaison for independent auditors, managing the preparation of all materials for the annual audit and Form 990 filing to ensure timely and favorable outcomes.
- Design, implement, and monitor a robust system of internal controls and financial policies, ensuring compliance with all governing regulations (e.g., GAAP, corporate, and nonprofit filings).
- Direct the oversight of all transactional workflows, including Accounts Payable/Receivable and the maintenance of the general ledger.
- Take full ownership of the bi-weekly payroll process (ADP) and oversee the enrollment and administration of all employee benefit plans.
- Work closely with managers to ensure accurate reconciliation and tracking of all restricted grant expenses and balances, coordinating closely with the Director of Grants.
- Oversee cash management, reconcile accounts monthly, and manage the annual renewal of all business insurance coverage in collaboration with the CEO on risk management functions.
- Provide direct technical supervision and mentorship to the finance team (~2.5 FTEs), ensuring high standards of accountability and execution.
- Continuously review, revise, and communicate workflows and processes to improve efficiency in finance, accounting, and billing operations.
Additional/other duties or job functions may be required as deemed necessary by JFS.
Education and Experience
- Minimum 10 years of progressive accounting experience, with a strong preference for candidates with nonprofit experience.
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance; MBA or relevant certification (CPA/CMA) strongly preferred.
Technical Expertise
- Expert knowledge and practical experience with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), specifically in a nonprofit environment.
- Proven experience directing and managing nonprofit financial audits and complex multiple funding streams/grant accounting.
- Expert-level proficiency in Microsoft Excel and high proficiency across the entire Microsoft Office Suite.
- Proficiency in accounting systems such as QuickBooks and experience navigating specialized systems like ADP and DonorPerfect Online (or similar online databases).
Leadership and Professional Competencies
- Demonstrated supervisory and team leadership experience.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills tailored for diverse stakeholders, including board members and executive management.
- Strong organizational and execution skills, characterized by a meticulous attention to detail and a focus on efficiency.
- Proven ability to rapidly adapt to changing priorities and collaborate effectively within a high-performing management team environment.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications
Must possess or be able to obtain before the start date, a valid and appropriate state driver’s license, registration, along with access to a reliable car, with proof of insurance.
