Theater Technician

The Theater Technician will be responsible for supporting all production and event efforts for the JCC Arts, Culture and Community Programs department and will report to the Production Manager. Department programs include Festivals (JAAMM, DJFF, and ReelAbilities), Denver Children’s Theatre, and Wolf Theatre Academy. These efforts include supporting technical and event operations for JCC, MACC, and rental users.  

Approximately 75% of scheduled shifts over the course of a year will be during weekend, evening, and holiday hours. Various programs and productions may also require regular workday hours, depending on program needs. 

Theatre Technician Responsibilities 

• Providing a world class experience for all JCC and MACC users and patrons 

• Supporting production and event operations for JCC, The Mizel Arts and Culture Center, and rental events 

• Supporting Technical Director in maintaining equipment functionality  

• Supporting Technical Director in maintaining theater facilities  

• Acting as needed in typical theatrical crew positions for internal and external events such as stage manager, light-board operator, sound-board operator, media operator, carpenter, and/or camera operator 

• Minimum of two years of experience working in a professional theater environment; 

• Strong understanding of theatre facilities and standard theatrical equipment; 

• Strong communication, organization, and technical skills; 

• Strong client management skills with a cordial and professional demeanor; 

• Experience with theatrical lighting, audio, video, and scenic construction; 

• Basic competency with Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, Excel, Outlook); 

• Great multitasker, attention to detail, hard-working and self-motivated; and 

• Availability to work nights and weekends. 

Preferred Qualifications 

These additional qualifications are preferred and will make candidates more competitive, but these are not required for the effective execution of the job responsibilities. 

• Bachelor’s Degree or greater in Technical Theater; 

• Comfortable with an ETC Ion light board, Behringer X32 digital sound board and basic knowledge of QLab software or comparable equipment and systems; 

• Experience troubleshooting lighting, audio and video equipment; 

• Experience providing event hospitality support; 

• Comfortable with hand and power tools; 

• Comfortable working with artists, children and families; 

• Comfort with large groups/audience interactions; 

• Knowledge of safety and security rules and regulations; and 

• Lighting, sound, video or scenic design experience. 

Physical Demands and Working Environment:   
The position requires the candidate to remain in a sitting position for prolonged hours in an office environment. While performing duties, the candidate is occasionally required to stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms, talk and hear. Candidate must occasionally lift and or/move up to fifty (50) pounds. Working conditions may include being in an open (shared) cubicle or workspace. For technical theatre responsibilities, conditions may include operating equipment in a light booth or sound booth in low light; working in a theatre shop with dust and power tools; climbing stairs and ladders to access lighting equipment; working in catwalks 20 feet above the stage and audience seating areas; and working in parts of the theatre with low light for prolonged periods of time.
