Career Counselor

JET – Northeast Minnesota Office of Job Training is accepting applications for a Career Counselor position at the Minnesota CareerForce in Duluth.

JET is a partner in the Minnesota CareerForce system serving the seven-county Northeast region and administers state and federal employment and training programs for dislocated workers, low-income adults, youth, and individuals receiving public assistance. Programs administered by JET include the Minnesota Youth Program, employment and training services for the Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP) and Diversionary Work Program (DWP), the Minnesota Dislocated Worker Program, and Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) services for adults, dislocated workers, and at-risk youth.

Position Summary

The Career Counselor provides direct employment and training services to individuals participating in JET programs. Depending on program needs and organizational priorities, the position may work with youth, adults, dislocated workers, individuals receiving public assistance, and other individuals facing barriers to employment.

The Career Counselor works directly with participants to assess their interests, abilities, skills, and career goals and assists them in developing individualized plans to achieve employment, education, training, self-sufficiency, and long-term stability. The position requires the ability to work effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and circumstances, including those experiencing barriers such as trauma, complex poverty, mental or chemical health challenges, disabilities, homelessness, limited education or work experience, and criminal justice involvement.

Responsibilities include:

• Providing individualized career counseling, case management, and employment and training services.
• Assessing participant interests, abilities, skills, barriers, and career goals.
• Assisting participants with career exploration, career planning, job search strategies, resume development, interviewing, and job retention.
• Providing guidance and support related to postsecondary education, occupational training, and other career pathways.
• Connecting participants with community resources and services to address barriers to employment and support self-sufficiency.
• Developing and monitoring individualized employment and training plans and participant goals.
• Assisting with work experience, internships, and other employment-related placements and opportunities.
• Conducting individual and group workshops, presentations, orientations, and other career readiness activities.
• Building effective relationships with participants, employers, educational institutions, community partners, and other service providers.
• Maintaining accurate and timely case notes, participant records, documentation, and program files.
• Monitoring participant progress and ensuring services and documentation comply with applicable program requirements, policies, procedures, and funding regulations.
• Collecting and maintaining required documentation and completing required data entry and reporting.
• Providing excellent customer service while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality.
• Working collaboratively with CareerForce partners and JET staff to coordinate services and resources.
• Performing other duties as assigned.

The position requires a high level of organization, attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to manage multiple priorities while providing compassionate, knowledgeable, and resourceful service to participants.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following educational and experience requirements:

• A four-year degree in behavioral or social sciences, education, business, human services, or a related field; or
• Be within six (6) months of obtaining a four-year degree; or
• A two-year degree and two years of related work experience.

This position is based at the Duluth CareerForce, located 402 West 1st Street, Duluth, MN 55802. The CareerForce office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. This is a union position starting at $30.13/hour, with full health benefits and paid leave.
