TITLE: School Bus Driver
SUMMARY:
The Student Transportation Bus Driver is responsible for providing safe, reliable, and efficient transportation for students to and from school, as well as to and from extracurricular activities. This role ensures that students have the opportunity to fully participate in the district's educational and extracurricular programs. The Bus Driver is responsible for maintaining a safe and orderly environment on the bus, following all traffic and safety regulations, and ensuring that each student is transported with care and professionalism.
REPORTS TO: Transportation Director
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Proficiency in English, with the ability to communicate effectively in Spanish is preferred.
- Ability to possess a valid, state issued driver’s license, CDL with endorsements for driving a school bus; demonstrate a clean driving record, and proficient in driving a school bus.
- Possess or the ability to obtain a DOT medical card.
- Demonstrate strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to manage student behavior during vehicle operation.
- Observe all safety regulations for school buses.
- Report student conduct issues to proper authority.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Administers the school bus transportation program within the assigned district, implementing regulations, policies, and procedures supporting the State Department of Education (IDE).
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections per IDE and District Standards.
- Transportation of authorize students and staff only.
- Discharge students at authorized stops only.
- Understand and complete all accident reports as necessary.
- Maintains approved schedule and route. Notify staff of any alterations to route.
- Maintain the bus interior area in a clean, orderly and safe condition.
- Enforce regulations adopted by the school board and the State Board of Education against smoking, eating and vaping on the bus.
- Communicate any delays, issues, or changes to transportation staff in a timely manner.
- Relay important bus and or equipment information to staff which may alter scheduling.
- Understand and follow board policy pertaining to school bus drivers.
- Performs other related duties as required.
TRAVEL REQUIRED:
The incumbent will be required to travel annually for local, state and national training conferences as well as IAPT competitions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of school buses and/or transportation vehicles.
- Manual dexterity to perform repetitive hand/wrist/arm motions and use of feet to operate a vehicle.
- Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate physical effort, typically involving a combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials up to 35 pounds.
- Tasks may be performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, or traffic hazards.
COMPENSATION:
- 164 days per year, approx. 4 hours per day.
- Salary to be determined by the School Board.
- Benefits as provided full-time classified staff.
EVALUATION:
- Employee’s performance in this position will be evaluated by the Transportation Director in conformance with district policy.
- Six-month probationary period.
