The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential duties of this job. The employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors in ambient temperatures and/or in walk-in freezer. The employee must be able to perform the duties in varying temperature changes (e.g., indoor to outdoor and vice versa). The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. JOB TITLE: Custodian
REPORTS TO: Director of Facilities and Building Principal
Essential Functions
- Keep building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean.
- Shovel and/or sand walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps as appropriate.
- Check daily to insure that all fire exit doors and panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy and thereafter.
- Help to implement school safety protections by ensuring that the designated entrances and exits to the facilities are monitored and regulated.
- Sweep classrooms daily and dust furniture; clean sinks; clean and dust other fixtures as necessary.
- Clean hallways and corridors after school each day, and during the day when necessary.
- Scrub, wash down, and disinfect toilet floors daily, and clean all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily and more frequently when appropriate.
- Wash all windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year, and more frequently if necessary. Keep the grounds free from rubbish.
- Empty trash cans into dumpster and replace liners.
- Keep all floors in a clean, sanitary, and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
- Use a buffer and mop and wax floors to maintain this condition.
- Clean and maintain all chalkboards and/or white boards.
- Make minor building repairs using basic tools, paint, and materials.
- Report major repairs needed promptly to the employee's supervisor.
- Maintain on a regular schedule all motors and other mechanical equipment requiring scheduled servicing.
- Report any damage to school property.
- Keep an inventory of supplies, equipment, and requisition such needed replacements far enough in advance so that they may be delivered in such time as will not hinder the custodian in his duties.
- Conduct an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair. Move furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by supervisor.
- Comply with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.
- Preserve confidentiality of student, personnel, and other sensitive information that is present in offices and other locations.
- Ensure regular and predictable attendance; be at duty station(s) on time; maintain positive interpersonal relationships with supervision, staff, students and visitors.
- Perform such tasks and assume such additional responsibilities as may be assigned. Custodian-Facilities
- Ability to add, subtract, divide and multiply in all units of measure consistent with the duties of this position
- Ability to interface effectively with other departments, school personnel, other maintenance staff, and business contacts form outside the district
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.
- Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
- Adheres to district and building policies, rules and procedures.
- Utilizes appropriate safety gear to minimize risk of injury and exposure.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of one year successful prior experience in custodial work preferred.
