EXAMINATION IS ANNOUNCED TO ESTABLISH AN EMPLOYMENT LIST TO FILL ONE (1) CURRENT WEST JEFFERSON VACANCY IN THE DEPARTMENT OF JUVENILE SERVICES AND FUTURE VACANCIES AS THEY OCCUR.
Kind of Work
Under direction, this is highly responsible professional level work involving supervisory and child custody work in managing and maintaining the L. Robert Rivarde Memorial Home, a detention center for juvenile offenders, which operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Employee will work under the guidance of, and at the direction of the Juvenile Detention Home Manager. During period of duty, this position is responsible for all activities of the detention staff and detained juveniles; making decisions in emergency and crisis situations; keeping detained juveniles in maximum security custody with least amount of discomfort; assisting in program planning; for seeing that pertinent laws, policies and procedures are adhered to; for supervising and training staff engaged in the safe care, custody and control of residents; and performing related work as required. This position is an essential, emergency duty status position and may not be relieved of duty when the Parish President or their designee recommends a voluntary or mandatory evacuation of Jefferson Parish. Position requires driving of a Parish vehicle, thus possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record will be given preference.
NOTE : Work is 40 hours per week on a rotating basis, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
Minimum Qualifications For Admission to Examination
Meets one of the following options :
I. Current employment and permanent civil service status in the class of Juvenile Detention Officer II, including three (3) years of work experience as a Juvenile Detention Officer II.
II. Possession of an accredited Bachelor's degree with major coursework in (or closely related to) Criminal Justice / Criminology, Social Work, or Clinical / Counseling / School Psychology; PLUS, at least two (2) years of paid experience : (i) working with juvenile offenders as a counselor, behavior interventionist, mental health or human services professional, or community outreach coordinator OR (ii) working in the juvenile justice system as a correctional / detention officer, law enforcement officer, probation officer, resident supervisor, or treatment provider.
III. Possession of an accredited Bachelor's degree (in any major of study); PLUS, at least three (3) years of paid experience, as described above in Category II.
IV. Possession of an accredited Associate's degree (in any major of study); PLUS, at least five (5) years of paid experience, as described above in Category II.
V. Possession of a high school diploma (or equivalent); PLUS, at least seven (7) years of paid experience, as described above in Category II.
SUBSTITUTION : A Master's degree in a major of study listed in Category II may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience of Category II.
NOTE : Any conviction listed in the Louisiana Child Protection Act (Louisiana R.S. 15 : 587.1) is considered disqualifying, unless written proof of pardon is submitted in time for consideration with the application.
Related education, experience, and / or professional certification(s) above and beyond the minimum qualifications will be required for consideration of an entrance salary above the minimum rate but not to exceed the listed salary range.

dependents. Jefferson Parish pays 80% of the premium for employees and 50% of
the premiums for dependents.

insurance and optional insurance with pre-tax dollars. A Flexible Savings
Account for Medical Expenses and Dependent Care is also available.
Retirement
Most regular employees belong to the Parochial Employees' Retirement
System instead of the Social Security System. For employees hired after
January 01, 2007, a pension calculated at 3% of salary per year of service
is provided upon retirement at age 67 with 7 years of service, age 62 with
10 years of service, or age 55 with 30 years of service.
Tenure Payment
Employees are paid $25 per year of service in December of each year.
Employees must have worked two years before the first check is paid.
Deferred Compensation Plan(457b plan)
Similar to 401K programs, the 457b Deferred Plan allows employees to defer
up to $14,000 of pretax income each year to supplement retirement savings.
Pre-tax contributions can be cashed in upon retirement or termination without
penalty. This plan is provided by Nationwide Retirement Solutions 1-877-677-3678.
