Purpose of Announcement
EXAMINATION IS ANNOUNCED TO ESTABLISH AN EMPLOYMENT LIST TO FILL ONE (1) CURRENT EAST JEFFERSON VACANCY IN THE DEPARTMENT OF ENGINEERING.
This employment list will also be used for future EAST AND WEST Jefferson vacancies in this Department as they occur.
Kind of Work
Under general supervision, the purpose of this position is to inspect public infrastructure construction and maintenance projects and conditions of public infrastructure for adherence to established engineering standards and regulations. Employees perform inspection duties in Jefferson Parish. Examples of assignments are inspection of the installation of municipal utilities (water, sewerage, drainage) and commercial fire services, along with estimating cost for new sewer connections. Position reviews and investigates complaints, records data, inspects workmanship, materials, and quantities used for compliance with established project specifications. Prepares various documentation related to assigned tasks including daily logs, weekly reports, surveys, project estimates. Prepares construction, maintenance, and / or repair estimates for assigned projects including material costs, quantities required, and competition schedule. Works collaboratively with contractor representatives, engineering firms, utility companies, and other parish departments in initiating, performing, and inspecting assigned construction and / or maintenance projects. Performs related work as directed. This position is an essential, emergency duty status worker and may not be relieved of duty when the Parish President or their designee recommends a voluntary or mandatory evacuation of Jefferson Parish. Position requires driving of a Parish vehicle, thus possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record will be given preference.
Minimum Qualifications For Admission to Examination
Must meet ONE of the following qualifying options :
I. Current employment with Jefferson Parish and permanent civil service status; plus, a minimum of six (6) months of verifiable training in the interpretation of municipal project specifications and the inspection of municipal infrastructure installations.
II. Possession of a high school diploma / equivalent or successful completion of vocational / trade school (not short courses)
- plus, a minimum of one (1) year of full-time, paid work experience inspecting, or directly supervising, the work performed (and materials used) in the installation, rehabilitation, or repair of municipal infrastructures, including : streets, roadways, bridges, sidewalks, water treatment plant equipment, drainage canal and ditch systems, and / or subsurface utility lines.
III. Possession of an accredited Associate's degree with at least eighteen (18) credit hours of coursework closely related to Construction Management or Civil Engineering.
Related education, experience, and / or professional certification(s) above and beyond the minimum qualifications will be required for consideration of an entrance salary above the minimum rate.

An HMO medical insurance plan is avalable for employees and their
dependents. Jefferson Parish pays 80% of the premium for employees and 50% of
the premiums for dependents.

Employees have the opportunity to save money by paying for health
insurance and optional insurance with pre-tax dollars. A Flexible Savings
Account for Medical Expenses and Dependent Care is also available.
Retirement
Most regular employees belong to the Parochial Employees' Retirement
System instead of the Social Security System. For employees hired after
January 01, 2007, a pension calculated at 3% of salary per year of service
is provided upon retirement at age 67 with 7 years of service, age 62 with
10 years of service, or age 55 with 30 years of service.
Tenure Payment
Employees are paid $25 per year of service in December of each year.
Employees must have worked two years before the first check is paid.
Deferred Compensation Plan(457b plan)
Similar to 401K programs, the 457b Deferred Plan allows employees to defer
up to $14,000 of pretax income each year to supplement retirement savings.
Pre-tax contributions can be cashed in upon retirement or termination without
penalty. This plan is provided by Nationwide Retirement Solutions 1-877-677-3678.
