Special Education Behavior Teacher Job Description

Reports To

Campus Principal / Special Education Director / Academic Dean

Position Summary

The Special Education Behavior Teacher provides instructional and behavioral support to students with disabilities who demonstrate significant behavioral needs. This role focuses on implementing individualized education programs (IEPs), behavior intervention plans (BIPs), and research-based strategies to improve student behavior, academic performance, and social-emotional skills in a structured learning environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instruction and Behavior Support

  • Provide individualized and small-group instruction aligned to students’ IEP goals.
  • Implement and monitor Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).
  • Teach and reinforce appropriate behaviors, social skills, and coping strategies.
  • Utilize research-based behavior management strategies, including PBIS and de-escalation techniques.

 

IEP Implementation and Compliance

  • Develop and implement IEP goals and accommodations in collaboration with the ARD committee.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of student progress toward IEP goals.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and district special education requirements.

 

Data Collection and Progress Monitoring

  • Collect and analyze behavioral and academic data to inform instruction.
  • Track frequency, duration, and intensity of behaviors.
  • Adjust interventions based on data and student progress.

 

Collaboration and Communication

  • Collaborate with general education teachers, administrators, counselors, and behavior specialists.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and behavior.
  • Participate in ARD/IEP meetings and campus support meetings.

 

Classroom Environment and Management

  • Establish a structured, safe, and supportive classroom environment.
  • Implement consistent routines, expectations, and behavior systems.
  • Manage student behavior using proactive and reactive strategies.

 

Professional Responsibilities

  • Participate in professional development related to behavior management and special education.
  • Support campus-wide behavior systems and initiatives.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university

 

Certification

  • Valid Texas Teaching Certificate in Special Education

 

Experience

  • Experience working with students with behavioral challenges preferred
  • Knowledge of behavior intervention strategies and special education law

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of behavior management strategies and interventions
  • Ability to develop and implement behavior plans
  • Strong classroom management and de-escalation skills
  • Ability to collect and analyze behavioral data
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills
  • Patience, flexibility, and commitment to student success

Physical and Work Conditions

  • Work in a classroom setting with students who may exhibit challenging behaviors
  • Ability to stand, walk, and respond quickly to student needs
  • May require participation in crisis intervention and de-escalation procedures
