FLSA STATUS: Exempt
Pursuant to West Virginia Code, if a current JCS employee is selected as a finalist for this position, the employee is not eligible to transfer until the 2026–2027 school year.
EMPLOYMENT TERM: Minimum 240 days annually, pursuant to WV Code §18-5-45; extended employment terms may be established by JCBOE
SALARY: Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-2, in accordance with Jefferson County Teacher Salary Schedule, commensurate with verified years of experience relevant to position and education level
EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated by the building principal/immediate supervisor and in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5310, and JCBOE Evaluation Policy
JOB SUMMARY: Provides appropriate instruction, learning activities, and experiences that ensure all students meet the learning objectives and standards for the appropriate content and grade level.

Specific Duties:
- Band Director: Oversees the total operation of the band program which includes but is not limited to the following: Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Marching Band, and all related performances; fundraising; inventory of all equipment, instruments, music, materials, ; supervision of students; related activities as approved by the principal
- Continually update skills to adapt to curriculum, materials and program
- Coordination of booster organization
- Coordination of summer band activities which may include band camp at a site other than a school location
- Coordination of activities and duties involving the assistant band director(s). Submit recommendations to the Principal regarding personnel.
- Communication with other band directors in the county to facilitate positive learning experiences and activities for all students involved in instrumental music.
MAJOR POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Responsible for planning and implementing WV content standards and high-quality secondary learning objectives, instructing students using effective instructional strategies and providing appropriate learning experiences, with high expectations for all.
- Responsible for implementing adopted and supplemental academic programs
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
- Participate as a contributing member of the relevant, assigned department or program.
- Keep appropriate records and prepare progress reports as assigned. Collaborate with interventionists, share data, identify student needs, and utilize expertise to support targeted interventions.
- Analyzes data to improve instruction and models instructional strategies which promote student achievement.
- Communicate with parents through a variety of means, including conferences, to discuss student progress and interpret academic program objectives and requirements
- Provide learning experiences designed to meet individual needs through individual and/or group instruction.
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in and out of the classroom by providing a safe and secure environment.
- Maintains and monitors an effective learning environment free of hazard, ridicule and prejudice.
- Assists with student management throughout the building, grounds and/or other JCS facilities.
- Coordinates parent/teacher and student/teacher conferences to review student performance, behavior, and other issues.
- Performs various administrative duties such as taking attendance, organizing the classroom, and responding to emails and phone calls from parents, school administrators, and staff in a timely manner.
- Complies with all requirements for mandatory reporting of child abuse, illegal harassment, breaches of ethics, or any criminal activity of which the employee becomes aware.
- Effectively communicates with students, parents, and other stakeholders via verbal and written communication
- Be accountable for individual student achievement and provide grades in accordance with the school’s grading policy and procedures.
- May be responsible for planning and implementing designated co-curricular activities and/or programs at the school such as curricular fairs, awards programs, and field trips

Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college and university. Valid teaching certificate licensing the individual to teach in the specializations and grade levels of the assigned endorsement area, pursuant to WV Code §18A-3-2; Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10, as appropriate; Meet the qualifications outlined in WV Code §18A-3-2a.

ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION:
As per West Virginia Code §5-10-48, individuals who have retired from a West Virginia school system are not eligible for re-employment in a West Virginia school system until 60 days have passed since their official retirement date.
