Perioperative Registration Clerk

POSITION OVERVIEW (non-exempt):

• Responsible for the clerical work in the perioperative department, including provider order entry.
• Acts as a receptionist and assists in scheduling patients for procedures.
• Assists in planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating the activities in the perioperative department.
• Answers the perioperative phone lines providing information in a courteous and efficient manner that is in compliance with HIPAA Privacy Guidelines, the Health Center’s compliance guidelines and the patient/visitor needs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Medical Assistant, LPN, or RN required, with current Iowa license.
• BCLS certification and Mandatory Reporter required.

• One-year experience in a health center, physician’s office or similar medical facility preferred.
• Computer skills required.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

Reports to Perioperative Nurse Manager and/or Assistant Perioperative Nurse Manager

POSITION-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

• Ensure the smooth and efficient flow of information. Provider order entry. Schedules patient flow through the Perioperative Department.
• Maintains unit operations by following policies and procedures; reporting needed changes.
• Maintains continuity among work teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
• Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
• Must be able to operate on-line input terminal
• Must have good time management, organization, attention to detail, quality focused, and demonstrate professionalism
• Assists nursing area with secretarial needs, reporting or data retrieval, assistance with quality reporting, or other duties as needed.
• Assist with maintaining the surgeon block schedule.
• Assist with the rooming of patients as needed
• Assist with call lights as needed.
• Uses the nursing process in providing care to the surgical patient from the pre-operative phase through recovery.
• Assures the proper pre-op work-up is completed by the time of surgery.
• Communicates pertinent information to the other staff members and the physician as required.
• Maintains a clean, safe and sterile field.
• Functions as an ACU , circulating or recovery nurse as directed by the Perioperative Nurse Manager or Assistant Perioperative Nurse Manager.
• Documents observations and interventions objectively to maintain an accurate patient record.
• Administers medications and IV solutions as prescribed.
• Recognizes life threatening or adverse conditions and responds appropriately.
• Monitors supplies and equipment for safety, working efficiency and availability.
• Follows the established procedures to receive, clean, prepare and disinfect/sterilize supplies.
• Handles infectious waste according to hospital policy.
• Performs teaching functions as required to the staff and patients.
• Promotes and participates in quality improvement, risk management and safety practices.
• Takes late call on a rotating basis. Responsive to on-call duties and responsibilities according to facility policy.
• Does specific quality monitoring and infection surveillance as delegated by the Perioperative Nurse Manager or Assistant Perioperative Nurse Manager.
• Recognizes the multidimensional nature of patient care by treating the total spectrum of needs (physical, emotional, social, spiritual).
• Attends all required and mandatory meetings.
• Contacts include but are not limited to co-workers, medical staff, volunteers, patients, and public (in person and on the telephone).
• Other duties as assigned

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

• Works in a well-illuminated, climate-controlled environment
• May come in contact with hazardous chemical or treatment modalities
• Possibility exists of exposure to communicable diseases
• Involvement in inpatient care may result in unavoidable work-related illness or injury
• Work environment is comfortable, with minimal exposure to physical hazards
• Moderate to loud noise environment when machines/equipment in use
• Involvement in checking in/moving of supplies may result in unavoidable work-related injury
• Must be constantly alert for patient/family emergency situations
