About The Innovation Internship Program

Jefferson County’s Innovation Team hosts a cohort of interns every fall and spring semester as well as during the summer. Innovation interns get first-hand experience in civic innovation, ranging from emerging technologies to transformational initiatives. We strive to build a strong community, even within a hybrid environment, and provide opportunities for mentoring, networking, professional development, and getting to know your fellow interns. Internships are designed to last at least a semester, and successful interns are encouraged and welcome to continue their internship.

About The Position

We are searching for an Innovation Intern to conduct research and provide recommendations in support of an emerging county-wide AI upskilling program. This initiative is focused on building a more resilient workforce by helping Jefferson County employees and community members develop essential skills for using AI in in-demand roles.

The intern will support early-stage research and planning efforts that inform how the program could be designed, delivered, and evaluated. This may include researching comparable programs, exploring approaches to curriculum, and identifying tools or strategies to support learning, assessment, and outcome measurement. The role may also involve applying business analysis practices such as understanding stakeholder needs, documenting requirements, and

analyzing gaps to help translate research findings into actionable recommendations. The successful candidate will be curious, analytical, and interested in research-driven decision making, business analysis, and the intersection of technology, workforce development, and public service.

Schedule

This internship is for 25-30 hours per week (not exceeding 130 hours in a calendar month) for the duration of the summer semester with the potential to extend internship based on performance. Most of these hours will be completed during core business hours, Monday-Thursday between 8 AM – 5 PM.

This internship is hybrid, with remote work and in-office work as determined by business need.

Compensation

Hiring Range: $22.00 – $25.00 USD Hourly

Compensation will be determined based on education, experience, and skills.

Benefits

Please note that this is a temporary, non-benefited position. There is no holiday pay. Employees are able to earn 1 hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to 48 hours.

Essential Duties

Specifically, the Innovation Intern should expect to:

  • Conduct research on comparable AI upskilling or workforce development programs
  • Assist in analyzing approaches to curriculum design and learning models
  • Explore options related to learning platforms, assessment strategies, or tools for tracking outcomes
  • Support efforts to define and measure success metrics for a pilot program
  • Apply basic business analysis techniques to understand stakeholder needs and program requirements
  • Synthesize research and analysis into clear insights and recommendations
  • Support documentation and knowledge sharing related to the pilot and research process
  • Assist with piloting or testing components of the program as appropriate

About You

We’re looking for a curious and thoughtful person who enjoys research, analysis, and asking big questions to help shape early-stage ideas. You’re comfortable working in open-ended environments and are excited to explore how emerging technologies like AI can support workforce resilience and economic mobility.
