Licensed Optician - Optical Establishment Permit (1099 Preferred / W-2

About the Opportunity

Gulf Coast Sunglasses, an established specialty sunglass retail store in Venice, Florida, is adding full prescription eyewear services and is seeking a Florida-licensed Optician to serve as the licensed optician of record for the location’s Optical Establishment Permit.

We prefer an independent contractor (1099) arrangement, but we are open to discussing a traditional W-2 employee role for the right candidate.

Gulf Coast Sunglasses will refer all prescription clients to you. Work is on an as-needed basis. Estimated hours to start are approximately 5–10 hours per week, with the potential to grow as RX volume increases.

Compensation

The listed hourly range is an estimate for posting purposes. Actual pay is primarily commission-based — a competitive percentage of gross prescription (RX) sales. Full details will be discussed with qualified candidates.

Key Responsibilities

• Serve as the licensed optician named on the store’s Optical Establishment Permit application and ongoing compliance
• Interpret and verify prescriptions
• Fit, adjust, and dispense prescription sunglasses and eyeglasses
• Coordinate with store staff on order intake, deposits, lab orders, and dispensing appointments
• Maintain professional standards consistent with Florida Board of Opticianry requirements

Requirements

• Active Florida Optician license (required)
• Willingness and ability to be listed as the licensed optician on the Optical Establishment Permit for this location
• Professional liability insurance (or willingness to obtain it) if working as a 1099 contractor
• Reliable, professional appearance and strong customer service skills
• Ability to work collaboratively with retail staff

Preferred

• Experience in a retail optical environment
• Comfortable with a commission-based structure tied to RX sales

Schedule

Flexible and as-needed. Estimating 5–10 hours per week to start. Hours will be coordinated based on customer appointments and store needs.
