Position Overview
The Senior System Engineer is a highly specialized technical expert responsible for the design, implementation, securing, and advanced maintenance of complex network infrastructure across enterprise and mission-critical environments. This role serves as a technical authority, providing network architecture guidance, performing Tier III escalation and troubleshooting of high-level connectivity issues, and ensuring network reliability, performance, scalability, and regulatory compliance. The Senior System Engineer collaborates closely with cross-functional teams, including cybersecurity, systems engineering, cloud operations, and program management, to support strategic IT infrastructure initiatives and meet mission requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Network Architecture & Design
- Design and implement scalable, secure, and resilient network systems across on-premises, cloud (AWS/Azure), and hybrid environments.
- Develop detailed architecture diagrams, documentation, and technical specifications related to network topology and connectivity.
- Evaluate emerging networking technologies and recommend improvements to network performance, reliability, and security posture.
High-Level Operations & Management
- Serve as the Tier III escalation point for complex system and network issues.
- Perform root-cause analysis on critical network faults and provide long-term corrective actions.
- Oversee network device upgrades, configuration management, and patching to ensure high availability and fault tolerance.
- Monitor system and network performance, proactively identifying and addressing areas for improvement.
Network Security & Compliance
- Implement and maintain security controls related to network devices, aligned with NIST, DoD, FedRAMP, or agency-specific compliance frameworks.
- Support network vulnerability management, incident response, and system hardening efforts, including firewall and VPN management.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation necessary for network audits, Authorization to Operate (ATO) packages, and compliance reporting.
Automation & Cloud Connectivity
- Build and support network infrastructure components within cloud environments (AWS/Azure).
- Utilize scripting languages (such as PowerShell, Python, and Bash) to automate network workflows, configuration deployments, and monitoring tasks.
- Optimize cloud connectivity, performance, and security configurations.
Required Qualifications (Specialized Professional Role)
- Education: Master's degree in computer science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
- Experience: 7-10 years of hands-on experience in network engineering, advanced infrastructure management, or similar highly specialized technical roles.
- Specialized Expertise: Strong expertise is required in the following areas:
- Networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, VPNs, firewalls).
- Windows and Linux server administration, especially as it relates to network services and monitoring.
- Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) and implementing hybrid connectivity solutions.
- Automation and scripting (PowerShell, Python, Bash).
- Regulatory Experience: Proven experience working in secure or regulated federal environments (DoD, DHS, FEMA, or other federal systems).
Preferred/Bonus Qualifications
- Certifications: Security (often required for federal contracts), AWS Solutions Architect / Azure Administrator, VMware VCP, CISSP, CCSP, or equivalent specialized network/security certifications.
- Experience supporting mission-critical or geographically distributed systems.
- Familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation for network resource provisioning.
- Knowledge of DevOps tools (CI/CD pipelines, GitLab/GitHub, Jenkins).
