What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Designer I position at JBW Consulting Engineers?

The ideal candidate for this role will live in the Duluth-Twin Ports or Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN area. Must reside in the United States. JBW participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with your Form I-9 information to confirm that you are authorized to work in the U.S.


JBW Consulting Engineers is a multidiscipline firm providing expert engineering and design services across the United States and Canada. Since establishing operations in Minnesota, JBW has grown to include offices in Montana and Wyoming, serving clients in the industrial, energy, manufacturing, and infrastructure sectors.

Roles, Responsibilities, and Expectations

  • Adhere to the core values of Relationships, Communication, Solutions, Technical Proficiency, Quality, and Responsiveness as defined by JBW.
  • Must have an entrepreneurial attitude and be willing to tackle different tasks as they arise.
  • Provide Mechanical Designer duties related to industrial facilities. These duties vary by project and current workload.
  • Work directly with Engineers to complete new designs and modifications to existing facilities.
  • Incorporate engineering changes to evolving designs for fast moving projects.
  • Become familiar with and apply accepted design/drafting methods and concepts, engineering and design principles, terminology.
  • Create detailed drawing packages for bidding and construction.
  • Create and revise solid models and detailed drawings using Revit, AutoCAD 3D, Plant 3D, and Inventor.
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate design and drawings archives and revision history, while following JBW’s quality control methods.
  • Must be willing to work in daily collaboration with other JBW team members, and a variety of industrial clients.
  • Perform field technician duties including measurements and point cloud scanning.
  • Perform site visits safely that range from 1-5 days, sometimes requiring travel (all expenses included). Travel is expected to be less than 10% annually but can vary in the short term based on project needs.
  • Other job duties as needed.


Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD 3D, Plant 3D, Inventor, BIM360, Navisworks, Bluebeam & Point Clouds.
  • Familiarity with Bluebeam Revu software.
  • Experience working in industrial settings such as refineries, mines, power plants, etc.
  • Experience with designing material handling systems.
  • Experience developing drawing packages and specifications for contractors to build from.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and codes.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, and Outlook).
  • Excellent leadership, writing, and verbal communication skills for effective collaboration with clients, project teams, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to prepare and deliver technical presentations, reports, and proposals to communicate complex technical concepts effectively.
  • Ability to manage multiple small projects simultaneously.


Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or AAS degree in mechanical design.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience.
