OB TITLE: Secondary Reading Interventionist
REPORTS TO: Campus Principal and Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction
DEPARTMENT/Campus: Jasper Junior High
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
A Reading Interventionist will work extensively with students to help them improve specific reading skills to address the needs when regular classroom instruction is not sufficient. They provide supplemental intervention and accelerated instruction to at-risk students using appropriate learning activities and strategies in Reading. The supplemental instruction and diagnostic assessment will enable students to develop competencies and skills for academic success.
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:
- Valid Texas teaching certificate and specific training in the teaching of reading.
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited University
- Preferred five years of successful teaching experience
- Preferred direct teaching experience of phonemic and phonological awareness.
- Preferred experience in secondary English/Language Arts.
- Preferred certification in K-8 elementary or reading specialist certificate / training.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Collects, analyzes, and prepares data for the purpose of interpretation, identification, progress monitoring, and reporting to the district and parents.
- Actively engage at-risk students in the learning process; plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
- Work collaboratively with teachers and professional support staff to ensure the individual needs of students are being addressed through supplemental services.
- Consult frequently with classroom teachers on matters relating to reading instruction using our progress-monitoring instrument as a base.
- Design interventions and write lesson plans detailing methods and materials.
- Assist in the evaluation of ongoing programs and make recommendations for change.
- Help teachers diagnose reading strengths and weaknesses and match these skills with appropriate techniques and materials.
- Keep the parents informed as to the purposes and progress of the reading intervention time.
- Work with support staff and school administrators to facilitate the coordination of the reading intervention time with the total curriculum.
- Consult with curriculum committees studying such topics as textbook selection, vocabulary development, concept development, supplementary materials and the development of study skills.
- Promote interest in reading.
- Work with the classroom teacher and district personnel to coordinate reading instruction designed to meet the individual needs of students.
- Be familiar with the RTI process and Tiered Instruction.
- Model core organizational beliefs and values; communicate openly and effectively within and across teams to maximize student success.
- Develop and maintain and instructional environment conducive to effective learning.
- Utilize technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.
- Utilize effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
- Maintain accurate and complete records as required by TEA and the district; file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
- Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
- Perform other responsibilities as may, from time to time, be assigned by the supervisor.

Salary : $50,000 - $75,500
