Overview

The Jansen Art Center is a nonprofit organization that values creativity and flexibility and creates opportunities for the community to engage in the arts. Located in a beautiful historic building, the center houses galleries, classes, concerts, and more. The Ceramics Program offers a variety of equipment and facilities, including potter’s wheels, an ADA throwing wheel, and electric, gas and soda kilns.

Position Summary

The Ceramics Program Director (CPD) brings a vision for advancing the Jansen Art Center Ceramics Program and Studio. They oversee all aspects of the program, including daily operations, budget management, annual planning, inventory, staffing and supplies. They create a safe, creative, and inclusive learning environment and promote Jansen Art Center activities in the community. The CPD collaborates with the Executive Director (ED), staff, students, volunteers, and artists to ensure the program's long-term success. They participate with staff at meetings and attend events. The CPD conducts glaze research and teaches classes exploring a range of firing techniques. They support and guide ceramics instructors and volunteers, and provide ongoing learning opportunities. The CPD nurtures positive relationships within the studio, organization, and community.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the studio is a clean and safe learning environment that meets industry standards and complies with Jansen protocols.
  • Design and teach at least three classes per season, covering a range of techniques for students of all ages and skill levels.
  • Offer regular demonstrations to exhibit advanced techniques and inspire participation.
  • Collaborate with staff and studio hosts to organize exhibitions, shows, and events showcasing students' work.
  • Prepare reports, collaborate with ED to support grant writing, and maintain records for student enrollment, attendance, and volunteer activities.
  • Coordinate with marketing staff on promotional efforts.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Will fully commit to the Jansen Art Center and be able to communicate its mission, goals, and programs effectively.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in fine arts, ceramics, or related field (MFA preferred).
  • 3 years of demonstrated management and administrative ability running a creative studio.
  • 3 years of teaching experience in ceramics at various levels.
  • Strong, proactive communicator who 1) seeks input and asks for help when needed and 2) openly shares knowledge and information.
  • Professional experience includes artistic, technical, and disciplinary skills in ceramics, including knowledge of glaze technology and kiln firing techniques.
  • High-level proficiency in a range of ceramics techniques, including wheel throwing, hand building, glazing, and firing processes.
  • Strong leadership and management skills with the ability to inspire and mentor others.
  • Knowledge of ceramic art history, contemporary trends, and artists.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, volunteers, students, and the community.
  • Experience in curriculum development and program planning.
  • Commitment to creating a workplace and studio that embraces the diverse backgrounds, experiences and perspectives of our community.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs or more, a plus.

Working Conditions

The CPD works primarily in the studio, which may involve dust, chemicals, and kiln heat exposure. The position requires evening and weekend hours during exhibitions, events, classes, and workshops.
