FT: Civil Engineering Technician, Jamestown.

The City of Jamestown Board of Public Utilities (BPU) has an immediate opening for a Civil Engineering Technician. The BPU is a

full-service utility provider serving residents and businesses in Jamestown, NY and surrounding communities with electric, water,

wastewater, solid waste, and district heating services.

Position Description

This is a para-professional technical engineering position and work will involve responsibility for maintaining distribution system

maps, records and computer system models. The incumbent will perform work under close review by engineers of higher rank,

with considerable leeway being allowed in working out the details of individual assignments. Employees in this class exercise

supervision of the work of subordinate employees during an assignment or project.

Civil Engineering Technicians prepare cost estimates involving labor, material and equipment for construction jobs; review

completed jobs and monitoring work orders; digitize information, enter data, and prepare reports and records information. The

person in this position may also coordinate staff, contractors and customers to answer questions and follow up on the status of

projects. They may design maps, plans, charts and other graphic illustrations for use by departments and agencies. The person in

this position also interprets property descriptions to prepare maps and draft changes to already existing maps; utilizes Global

Positioning System (GPS) to create and update utility assets; assists in determining and directing the appropriate actions in regard

to the installation, testing, or maintenance of commercial/industrial water meters and backflow prevention devices; gathers data

on occupancy, use and development of public and private properties; maintains necessary files of maps, plans, charts, and other

materials; investigates or directs field representatives to verify information for use in the preparation of maps and related

materials; and, takes field notes and conducts special studies and investigations as assigned. Civil Engineering Technicians perform

a variety of sub-technical engineering tasks, field work, and related clerical duties.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

The person in this position must possess working knowledge of basic engineering fundamentals and of drafting; basic knowledge

of computer applications with geographic information system (GIS); working knowledge of construction fundamentals, tools,

terminology and materials; ability to interpret field data and transfer information to maps; the ability to prepare verbal and written

reports; ability to make basic mathematical calculations; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to gain cooperation

of others; neatness; and accuracy and good judgment. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the job.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a New York State registered or regionally accredited college or university with an Associates Degree or higher in

Science with major in Engineering Science, Civil Engineering Technology, and Math or Physics. Must possess a New York State

Drivers license at time of appointment and during service in this classification.

The position of Civil Engineering Technician falls in the Competitive Class of the Civil Service Commission Classification Plan. All

applicable rules and regulations of the New York State Civil Service Commission (including all local rules and regulations) shall

apply.

Compensation

The BPU offers a competitive salary and benefit package, including membership in the New York State & Local Retirement System.

Salary range is between $48,632 to $72,948.
