Purpose
The Yardman plays a vital role in maintaining the organization, safety, and efficiency of the dealership’s equipment yard. This position is responsible for loading and unloading equipment, maintaining accurate inventory records, ensuring proper equipment setup before delivery, and keeping the yard clean and presentable. The Yardman supports the sales, service, and parts departments by ensuring equipment is handled safely, stored properly, and ready for customer delivery or display.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Handling & Yard Organization
- Load and unload equipment safely and efficiently
- Maintain a check-in/check-out log with serial and tag numbers for accurate inventory tracking
- Ensure equipment is stored in the correct location and parked neatly on the lot
- Perform daily inspections of the forklift and maintain inspection logs
- Conduct daily fluid level checks on equipment before it leaves the yard
- Ensure equipment leaves with proper attachments, manuals, and documentation
- Designate and manage areas for machines with leaks to maintain environmental safety
Communication & Coordination
- Communicate equipment issues or yard concerns to sales and service teams
- Ensure customers and contractors properly load and secure equipment
- Coordinate with internal departments to support equipment readiness and delivery
Facility & Safety Oversight
- Periodically inspect the yard and exterior of the building for safety or repair needs
- Follow all safety procedures and use appropriate PPE
- Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free yard environment
Performance Expectations
- Exercise proper loading, unloading, and handling techniques
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date inventory logs
- Ensure all equipment is clean, fueled, and display-ready
- Identify and report safety hazards or maintenance needs promptly
- Support seasonal demands with flexibility in scheduling and workload
Physical Requirements
- Frequent lifting, bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods
- Ability to operate forklifts and maneuver around heavy equipment
- Work performed in outdoor environments with exposure to varying weather conditions
- Risk of exposure to dirt, grease, fumes, loud noise, and chemicals such as oils, antifreeze, and battery acid
- Must follow strict safety procedures and wear appropriate PPE
