This position is not benefits eligible.  The work hour expectation is 17.5 hours per week.

 

Job Summary:


The Family and Student Behavior Support Specialist serves as a liaison among school staff, students, and families to promote positive student behavior, strengthen family engagement, and improve academic achievement in alignment with the school’s Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) framework. This position improves communication between home and school, provides proactive behavior monitoring and intervention, and supports families in becoming active partners in their child’s education. The position is funded by and must comply with Title I, Part A federal program requirements and school division policies.

 

Duties and Responsibilities
Student Support & Behavior Intervention
• Provides student support consistent with the school’s MTSS program.
• Checks in with assigned students throughout the day to ensure readiness for learning.
• Observes, monitors, & documents student academic & behavioral progress; communicates findings with administrators, teachers, counselors, & families.
• Reinforces instructional and behavioral strategies as directed by classroom teachers and intervention teams.
• Assists students during in-school suspension or exclusionary periods by monitoring work completion and returning assignments to teachers.
• Monitors, reports, and responds to inappropriate behavior in accordance with school policies.
• Supervises students during non-instructional times (arrival, dismissal, meals, transitions).
• Provides assistance during emergencies, including medical needs and crisis situations.

Family Engagement & Community Partnership
• Works closely with families, school staff, and community partners to strengthen communication and collaboration.
• Plans, coordinates, and facilitates family engagement events, workshops, and trainings based on school and community needs (e.g., attendance, homework support, special education processes, advocacy skills).
• Conducts outreach to encourage parent participation in PTA, parent-teacher conferences, volunteer activities, and school events.
• Provides translation and interpretation support to ensure equitable access to communication and resources.
• Coordinates incentives and supports (e.g., field trips, childcare, awards, family activities) to encourage participation.
• Collects and analyzes data (attendance, surveys, engagement metrics) to evaluate and improve family and student support activities.

 

Compliance & Recordkeeping
• Maintains accurate records of student support activities, family engagement efforts, and program participation in accordance with Title I requirements.
• Provides regular updates, progress summaries, and evaluation data to Title I Teachers, the Title I Coordinator, and school administrators.
• Participates in required professional development and training aligned with Title I, Virginia DOE guidelines, and division initiatives.
• Safeguards all student and family information in compliance with FERPA and program policies.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required)
• High school diploma or GED required; completion of at least two years of study (48 college credits) at an institution of higher education, or an associate’s degree or higher, preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly in speech and writing; bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred.
• Proficiency in word processing, data entry, and basic computing; ability to learn instructional and assessment software.
• Experience in education, student support, or family/community engagement preferred.
• Strong interpersonal skills, cultural competence, and a demonstrated concern for the welfare of children and families.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with federal, state, and division policies.
• Ability to interpret and apply school policies and Title I program guidelines.
• Ability to plan, organize, and manage multiple responsibilities and adapt to schedule changes.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, administrators, families, and community partners.

 

Supervision
Received: Works under the supervision of building administrators, Title I Teachers, and the Title I Coordinator.
Exercised: None.

 

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
Duties are normally performed in school/classroom settings with frequent interaction with students and families. Requires ability to sit, stand, kneel, or stoop for periods of time. Must occasionally lift or move up to 30 pounds. May work under pressure to meet data, reporting, or program deadlines.
