Job description:
We are an independent jewelry store that has been family owned and operated since opening in 1984. We specializes in: custom jewelry manufacturing and design, jewelry repair, jewelry sales, and buying of gold, silver, platinum and diamond estate jewelry.
We are looking for a gemologist, who is passionate about working with jewelry, stones, and customers, to join the James Hawkes Designs family.
(James Hawkes Designs is also know as Hawkes & Co and Jimmy's Gold Vampire)
The Job would include:
- Sorting and Grading Diamonds - sorting through the diamonds we purchase through our estate buying program so we can reuse them in our original pieces.
- Testing Colored Stones - Verifying the colored stones in estate jewelry and from scrap to price out for the floor or use in our original pieces.
- Jewelry Appraisals - Completing the appraisal process for customer jewelry and custom designs.
- Sourcing/Pricing Stones for Custom Designs - Assist with find and pricing out stones to be used in custom designs during the consultation and quote development process.
- General customer service - Greeting customers as they come into the store and assisting them with their needs.
- Assisting Sales in store and online as needed. (All employees are taught this even if not your primary duty)
- General sales - Create customer invoices, orders, and custom consultation quotes
- Taking in jewelry repairs - Talking with the customer to see what repair work they need done, and confirming with our on staff jewelers, along with quoting the customer a price to complete the repair.
- Jewelry buying - Buying estate / pre-owned jewelry from the public, you will receive training on site, on how to test jewelry to determine the metal, and how to price out the jewelry using our custom computer software.
- Answering phones - Answering customer questions and directing calls.
- Addressing emails & online inquiries - Answering customer questions/ assisting with orders in the live chat and email.
- General workstation maintenance - Keeping work areas clean and presentable.

Job Requirements:
- GIA Diamond Graduate Certificate or equivalent
- GIA Graduate Gemologist certificate (preferred. Active enrollment with set completion date required)
- General computer knowledge and skills
- An outgoing personality, willing and able to interact with customers face to face.
- Ability to work closely as a team with other co-workers
- Problem solving skills
- Willingness to learn

Other tasks of the job:
- Refinishing estate pieces to like new condition (we buy a lot of pre-owned / estate jewelry, we will refinish this jewelry and sell it in our store)
- You may need to help customers, or help a sales associate with a customer on the showroom floor
Full Time Job:
- Approximately 40 hours per week
- Additional hours may be necessary during Christmas / holiday season and other busy times
- Pay per hour depends on experience

Employee work week is 5 days a week with Sunday (and Monday during closed season) always being one of your days off and flexible days/hours off that may change from week to week.
We require you to be here an hour before we open and occasionally half an hour after we close on a typical work day. You are given a 1 hour unpaid lunch break, and two 15 minute paid breaks daily.
