We are seeking a motivated and experienced Plumbing & Fire Protection Engineer to join our Boston team and support the design and delivery of complex building projects throughout the state.
Position Summary
The Plumbing & Fire Protection Engineer will be responsible for the design, coordination, and documentation of plumbing and fire protection systems for a variety of building types. The ideal candidate will have strong technical expertise, experience working within multidisciplinary teams, and the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced consulting environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design plumbing systems including domestic water, sanitary waste and vent, storm drainage, natural gas, and specialty piping systems
- (Training can be provided) Design fire protection systems including wet pipe, dry pipe, standpipe, and pre-action systems in accordance with applicable codes and standards
- Prepare engineering calculations, reports, specifications, and construction documents
- Coordinate with architects, structural engineers, mechanical/electrical engineers, and external consultants
- Participate in project meetings, site visits, and construction administration activities
- Perform code analysis and ensure compliance with local, state, and national codes including NFPA, IBC, IPC, and Massachusetts amendments
- Support BIM/Revit modeling and interdisciplinary coordination efforts
- Review shop drawings, RFIs, and submittals during construction phases
- Assist with project scheduling, budgeting, and technical quality control
- Mentor junior engineers and designers as needed
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or related field
- 5 years of experience in plumbing and fire protection engineering within an A/E consulting environment
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred or ability to obtain within 12 months
- Strong knowledge of NFPA standards, IPC, IBC, and Massachusetts building codes
- Experience with Revit and AutoCAD required
- Familiarity with hydraulic calculation software and plumbing sizing programs
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively within project teams
Preferred Experience
- Healthcare, laboratory, life sciences, higher education, or commercial high-rise project experience
- LEED accreditation or sustainable design experience
- Experience coordinating with contractors and commissioning teams
- Familiarity with BIM 360 and cloud-based project collaboration tools
