Position Summary
JAM Swim School is seeking a dedicated Aquatics Team Member who will serve as both a Swim Instructor and Lifeguard. In this dual role, you will help create a safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate aquatic environment while supporting swimmers of all ages in building confidence and skills in the water.
You will work under the guidance of the Director of Aquatics to teach group and private lessons, supervise open swim, respond to emergencies, and uphold the highest standards of safety and customer service. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys both teaching and maintaining a safe aquatic environment.
Schedule & Commitment
- Up to 20 hours per week, with potential for additional hours
- Weekday morning availability (6 am - 1 pm)
- Wednesdays: 4:30 pm - 7:30 pm
- Saturdays: 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
- Flexible availability for private lessons and summer swim camp preferred
Pay Range
- $12.00 – $19.00/hour (general hours)
- $17.00 – $24.00/hour (private lessons)

Key Responsibilities
Swim Instruction
- Plan and implement engaging, developmentally appropriate swim lessons following JAM Swim School curriculum
- Teach group classes, private lessons, and assist with swim camps
- Track attendance and swimmer progress accurately
- Communicate effectively with participants and families regarding progress and goals
- Set up and clean up lesson stations
Lifeguarding & Safety
- Maintain active surveillance of the pool area to ensure safety of all patrons
- Recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies
- Enforce aquatic facility policies and procedures
- Inspect the facility daily and report unsafe conditions
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the aquatics area
Team & Facility Support
- Participate in in-service trainings, team meetings, and professional development
- Maintain physical readiness and swimming proficiency
- Assist with marketing, outreach, and special events as assigned
- Complete records, reports, and additional duties as needed
Qualifications
Required:
- Lifeguard Certification (offered at JAM seasonally)
- Ability to work in and around water for extended periods in a warm, humid environment
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with participants of all ages
- Comfortable enforcing rules, maintaining safety, and responding in emergency situations
Preferred:
- Experience as a lifeguard
- Experience teaching swim lessons or working with youth
- Competitive swimming experience or knowledge of swim techniques
- Previous customer service experience
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, sit, and move for extended periods
- Ability to swim, lift, kneel, crouch, and respond quickly in emergency situations
- Must be able to see, hear, and communicate clearly in an aquatic environment
