High School Paraprofessional

Jalen Rose Leadership Academy is hiring a Full Time Paraprofessional. Preference will be given to candidates whose resumes demonstrate measurable impact and data-driven results.

As an educator with Jalen Rose Leadership Academy, you are considered a guardian to our students (whom we refer to as scholars). You will also build trust and community in your classroom via clear and timely communication with your scholars and families. Established in 2011 by NBA Star Jalen Rose and Co-Founder Michael Carter, JRLA is located on the Northwest side of Detroit in the zip code where Jalen grew up. An open enrollment, tuition-free, public charter high school, JRLA provides a leadership-focused education to 420 scholars and nearly 1,000 alumni. The mission is to empower all scholars to develop the strength of character, skills, and knowledge needed to matriculate, be great in, and graduate from college or a postsecondary program so that they have the opportunities to be successful in the competitive world and take care of themselves and the people they love. 

Built around a 9-16 model, JRLA has never wavered in its pursuit to improve the educational landscape for Detroit area youth. After 13 years of operations, JRLA remains steadfast in its commitment to not only get scholars to graduate from high school but for them to graduate from college or a postsecondary program as well – outcomes that are real game changers in urban education. With a 95% high school graduation rate, 100% college and postsecondary acceptance, 90% average daily attendance rate, 20 enrichment offerings, and a leader among open enrollment high schools in Detroit for college matriculation (69% compared to a state average of 64%), JRLA knows the path to college and a successful future.  

Job Summary:

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Paraprofessional to join our team. The ideal candidate will assist teachers in providing support to students, helping to create a positive and productive learning environment. This role is essential in fostering academic growth and ensuring that all students have the resources they need to succeed.

Key Responsibilities:

Essential Duties:

• Assist teachers with the preparation and implementation of instructional materials, resources, and classroom activities.

• Provide instructional assistance under the supervision of the classroom Teacher.

• Provide one-on-one and small group support to students in various subjects.

• Support students with special needs and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) under the direction of the classroom Teacher.

• Help with classroom management and maintain a positive learning environment.

• Monitor student progress and behavior, providing feedback to teachers and other educational staff.

• Supervise students during non-instructional times (e.g., recess, lunch).

• Communicate effectively with teachers, students, and parents regarding student progress and needs.

• Maintain confidentiality of student records and other sensitive information.

• Assist in the preparation and delivery of instructional plans.

• Support student assessment

• Regular and predictable attendance

Cognitive Demands:

• Supervise multiple students at once

• Provide instructional assistance to students in an individual or small group setting

• Ability to maintain a safe and orderly environment for students

• Participate in continuous professional development

• Effective oral and written communication skills

Physical Demands:

• Occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds 

• Stand and walk frequently

• Withstand all demands presented by outside weather conditions at any time of the year 

• Assist/lift students if necessary

• Withstand a moderate noise level

• Uphold professional ethics and standards as an educator and a member of the Jaguar family. 

Qualifications:

• Completed at least two years of study at an accredited institution of higher education (equal to 60 semester hours); or obtained an associate's degree from an accredited institution; or meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate knowledge through passage of an approved formal state academic assessment.

• Previous experience working with children or in an educational setting.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

• Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for helping students succeed.
