Position Summary

The primary purpose of this position is to work directly within the Transloading group, performing the full range of duties and responsibilities involved in the safe and efficient transfer of materials between railcars and trucks. This role primarily functions as a Transload Operator, supporting daily material handling operations and customer service requirements.

In addition, this position will provide backup coverage as a Conductor when operational needs require. Therefore, valid FRA 242 Conductor certification is required. When serving in the conductor capacity, the individual will safely coordinate and control railcar switching operations in compliance with all railroad rules and regulations.

This is a safety-sensitive, hands-on position requiring strong operational awareness, sound judgment, and the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Transload Operator (Primary Function)

  • Demonstrate predictable, reliable, and timely attendance.
  • Follow written and verbal directions to complete assigned tasks on schedule.
  • Operate conveyors, forklifts, cranes, and other material handling equipment.
  • Prepare equipment for product transfer.
  • Transfer materials to and from railcars and trucks utilizing safe operating procedures.
  • Complete required documentation, recordkeeping, and inventory reporting.
  • Participate in safety briefings and job briefings.
  • Climb on and underneath railcars to inspect and seal equipment.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks including lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Conductor (Backup Responsibilities)

  • Control and coordinate train movements while switching railcars.
  • Read and interpret switching orders, track warrants, and railroad rules.
  • Couple and uncouple railcars and connect air hoses.
  • Throw track switches and apply or release hand brakes.
  • Inspect locomotives before and after operations to verify FRA compliance.
  • Maintain records of railcar movements and cargo.
  • Communicate effectively via radio and hand signals.

Requirements And Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid FRA 242 Conductor certification required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of job-related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to pass required training and testing.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Broad understanding of railroad and transload operations.
  • Knowledge of Roadway Protection Rules.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to recognize operational and safety concerns.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical labor.
  • Willingness to work flexible schedules as needed.

Work Environment

The team member is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions, moving equipment, elevated work areas, noise, and fumes from gas, oil, and grease.

Machines, Tools, Special Equipment, and PPE

  • Forklifts, conveyors, and crane equipment.
  • Locomotives and switching equipment.
  • Hand tools including hammers, ratchets, chisels, pry bars, and wrenches.
  • Radios and signaling devices.
  • Required PPE: hard hat, high-visibility vest, safety glasses, FR clothing, gloves, and steel-toed boots.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a team member to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position will regularly lift heavy materials and will be required to climb, balance, stoop/bend, twist, squat/kneel, crawl, and operate off of foot & hand controls.
