This job description is for a position at the NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California. The open position is in the Wind Tunnel Division as a “System Administrator”. This is a contract position working on the Jacobs Technology “ATOM” (Aerospace Testing, Operations and Maintenance) contract.
This position will be responsible for maintaining a variety of OS platforms. Solaris 10, Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Windows. The system administrator will be responsible for managing these systems consistent with the workflows necessary to support wind tunnel operations. Most of the systems involved are air-gapped from the internet and are wiped and reloaded between tests.
The system administrator will provide support for the above system lifecycle which will also require maintaining the configuration management of system baselines, performing system backups, installing and configuring application software and managing user accounts, in addition to the previously stated wipe and reload process.
The system administrator must have basic knowledge of configuring and troubleshooting the networking for these systems and maintaining documentation of the network topology for each test’s configuration.
This system administrator must be able to prioritize multiple tasks and work independently. The admin must also monitor the security posture of the systems, be able to resolve OS issues identified in the system log files and attend staff meetings and produce status reports. Being able to develop scripts to perform the required system administrative requirements will be a plus.
The successful candidate will be part of an integrated wind tunnel test team supporting the Wind Tunnel System Branch in the Ames Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel facilities. This is a challenging, fast paced environment that tests commercial, military and NASA test articles. The successful candidate will also be expected to be able to obtain a security clearance. Shift work may be involved.

Other Essential Functions
The Wind Tunnel Division is a dynamic work environment and may require other duties as assigned. Must be able to obtain a NASA badge and gain access to the facilities.
A certificate, Associates Degree, or Bachelors Degree in a computer systems related field is desired. Relevant and verified course work or experience in a related field could be considered. This position requires a demonstrated understanding and experience with computer systems, hardware/software, networks, operating system deployment, system administration, and troubleshooting skills. This position also requires the candidate to have excellent collaboration skills, innovative thinking, to be outgoing, task oriented, and motivated to help the organization be successful. Background and experience in aeronautics, data systems, and wind tunnel testing is desirable. This position also requires the candidate to complete on the job Safety Training to perform assigned work activities. This candidate must be a U.S. Citizen and able to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
