Position: Outreach Worker
Purpose: To work with homeless and otherwise vulnerable youth and young adults (ages 10 - 24) in Linn and Benton Counties to improve quality of life, prevent future problems, and achieve personal growth; helping to reduce harm, exit street life, build housing stability, make permanent connections, achieve self-sufficiency and connect to community support services, with guidance and assistance in overcoming any barriers.
Responsibilities:
General/Administrative-
- Maintain a working relationship with other staff, program partners, community members, volunteers, and student interns
- Be a role model for staff, volunteers, interns, and youth; in terms of professional behavior such as emotional regulation, communication, conflict resolution, problem-solving, boundaries, etc.
- Seek and maintain relevant knowledge and understanding of organizational continuum of care, community resources/services, and referral processes (external and internal)
- Conduct crisis intervention and effective problem solving skills, in accordance with Jackson Street procedures, to appropriately respond and de-escalate situations that may arise in community, group, and drop-in settings
Maintain documentation and data collection in accordance with Jackson Street standards Attend and actively participate in required meetings as a representative of Jackson Street (internal and external)
- Be an active member of the Overnight Shelter and Street Outreach relief teams to provide coverage, as needed. Also be the positions primarily responsible for covering the Youth Service Center shifts coverage needs.
- Participate in training and professional development activities to meet position and program expectations
- Assist with identifying and maintaining volunteer tasks and projects, including supporting volunteers during volunteer shifts
- Perform other duties and assist in projects as directed
Direct Care/Drop-in Center(s)-
- Work scheduled and unscheduled open hours at the drop-in center(s) and contribute to maintaining the weekly shift schedule
- Implement drop-in programming, provide direct services, and consistently engage with all YYA during open drop-in hours
- Maintain a trauma-informed atmosphere and rapport that builds trust with each YYA served
- Ensure basic needs of YYA are met at time of contact within drop-in and/or groups and assess the need for follow up and continued services
- Support YYA in meeting goals for safe and stable housing through referrals, follow up, and warm handoffs
- Support transportation needs for YYA in services as needed and approved
- Assist in maintaining youth social media presence and communications, including requesting, creating, and implementing regularly scheduled posts
- Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming environment at the Youth Service Center and Drop-In site(s) by completing daily operational tasks, opening/closing procedures, and monitoring inventory and restocking resource supplies
- Support with food share duties, such as pick ups, recall notices, and organization
- Assist with putting away donations for the drop-in and Outreach program Community.
Outreach-
- Engage in the surrounding communities to build relationships and understanding of local culture, geography, demographics, needs, and economic conditions
- Assist in staffing prevention services, community presentations, pop-up drop-ins, and other Outreach programming as needed
- Facilitate support groups within the organization and community settings
- Maintain recruitment efforts for drop-in programming
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in human services or equivalent field or minimum of two years experience in direct care with youth in crisis. Experience working with community-based partners and social service agencies is a plus. An understanding and knowledge of adolescent developmental issues, evidence based practices, and alternative solution focused approaches to address objectives. Maintain an ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of an integrated team, relate effectively with youth, guardians, community, and referral sources; in a flexible, sometimes stressful, unstructured work environment. Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and ability to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, maintain confidentiality, engage in respectful and collaborative problem solving, and present with a professional appearance appropriate to the position. Must be able to pass a criminal history check, have a valid Oregon driver’s license, have an acceptable driving record, maintain auto insurance, and be able to make at least a one year commitment to the position. An applicant who is QMHA, bi-lingual/bi-cultural, or a One Circle facilitator is preferred. Pay & Benefits: Pay starts at $18.50 an hour ($0.50/hour additional pay for Bilingual Spanish).
