Description

The Department of TRIO Student Support Services is accepting applications for its SSS STEM Program Coordinator application.

Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally-funded TRIO grant program and is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. The SSS Program provides opportunities for academic development, assists students with basic college requirements, and motivates students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education. The SSS-STEM Program at JSU will serve a minimum of 120 participants annually.


Examples of Duties

  • Assist with reporting and evaluation of the program.
  • Assist with recruiting, identifying, selecting, admitting and registering students in the program.
  • Provide advising and counseling of program participants on academic, career, and personal issues, relating to their educational and physical/mental well-being.
  • Identify educational and career options appropriate for program participants and assist with analyzing each option with the student.
  • Create an Individual Career and Academic Plan (iCAP) to help each program participant achieve academic goals.
  • Monitor the progress of program participants throughout their matriculation at the university.
  • Assist with the coordination and retention efforts of participants.
  • Assist with providing informational seminars and workshops for program participants.
  • Identify and encourage program participants to participate in internships, scholarship programs, and various activities.
  • Collect and maintain current advisement data related to all program participants.
  • Contribute to the preparation and distribution of program participants' correspondence, reports, memoranda, and statistical data.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM-related area or education. Master's Degree (preferred) in a STEM-related area, counseling, education, or higher education or a related field.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years working in an SSS or other TRIO program or a past participant in an SSS or TRIO program.
  • Experience working with at-risk/disadvantaged students while increasing persistence, retention and graduation rates, as well as, promoting career exploration and financial education.
  • Specialized training in providing wrap-around student support services for students from first-generation, low-income, and disabled backgrounds in the following categories: college transition assistance, financial education, career and leadership development, academic success strategies, graduate school preparation, connection, and community support.
  • Proven experience working effectively with low-income, first-generation, and students with disabilities in need of academic assistance.
  • Proven experience collaborating with college personnel and outside agencies.
  • Proven experience providing individual and group counseling.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Strong soft skills desired such as leadership, communication, interpersonal, teamwork, problem-solving, work ethic, and flexibility/adaptability.
  • Must be able to follow oral and written directions and have the ability to establish effective working relationships with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to creatively motivate, empower, and recognize students.
  • Visual, auditory, and ambulatory ability.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Conflict management and strong organizational skills.
  • Empathetic and positive relationship builder.
  • Ability to track, report, and analyze data; assist with input of student and staff data for reporting requirements.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Email, and other databases.
