Reports To: Art Program Manager
Schedule: Thursday evenings, 4:00–8:00 PM (September–May)
Compensation: $18–$20/hour

Position Overview

We are seeking a passionate, creative, and experienced Art Instructor to join our team. This role focuses on teaching pottery, sculpture, and three-dimensional art to students ages 4–18.

The ideal candidate will foster creativity, self-expression, and artistic skill development while creating an engaging, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment. Candidates should have experience working with clay and pottery processes and be comfortable guiding students through the creation of finished pieces.

Key Responsibilities

  • Curriculum Development: Plan and implement structured, age-appropriate lessons that encourage creativity, artistic growth, and technical skill development
  • Instruction: Teach pottery, sculpture, and three-dimensional art techniques using a variety of materials, including clay, paper mâché, cardboard, wire, found objects, and mixed media
  • Pottery & Kiln Processes: Guide students through clay construction, glazing, and finishing techniques. Coordinate firing of student work through personal or accessible kiln resources
  • Classroom Management: Maintain a safe, clean, and organized studio environment while managing supplies, tools, and materials
  • Student Engagement: Adapt projects and instruction to meet varying attention spans, learning styles, and developmental levels
  • Art Exhibition Support: Assist with organizing, displaying, and presenting student artwork for exhibitions and community showcases
  • Mentorship: Encourage creativity, self-expression, and confidence while supporting the unique artistic development of each student
  • Collaboration: Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development opportunities as needed

Qualifications

Required:

  • Experience teaching pottery, sculpture, or visual arts in an academic, studio, or community setting
  • Knowledge of clay techniques, glazing, and pottery processes
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage a classroom and maintain organization
  • Access to a kiln or ability to coordinate firing of student work

Preferred:

  • Associate’s degree (or higher) in Fine Arts, Art Education, or a related field
  • Experience with digital tools and classroom technology (e.g., projectors)
  • Knowledge of art history and contemporary artistic practices
  • Experience working with students of varying abilities, including those with disabilities or special needs
  • Experience in a nonprofit or mission-driven environment

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Ability to lift 25–40 lbs (supplies, clay, and equipment)
