Description: The High School Dean of Students assists the Building Principal in the general administration of the high school, with a primary focus on maintaining a safe, orderly, and productive learning environment. This role collaborates on disciplinary matters to ensure student accountability while actively assisting in instructional support to drive academic achievement.
The Dean manages attendance reporting, facilitates high school testing programs, and supports students in their transition to post-secondary opportunities. Additionally, the Dean serves as a primary visible administrator for school safety, extracurricular supervision, and the continuous improvement of student learning outcomes.
Essential Functions
- Student Leadership & Culture: Serve as a role model for young adults; foster ethical principles, democratic values, and responsible citizenship within the student body.
- Behavior & PBIS: Implement and oversee Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to promote a culture of respect; manage low-level student discipline and assist with major investigations.
- School Safety: Act as a lead for the school safety program; perform regular walk-throughs and maintain high visibility during school hours and transitions.
- Academic Support & Testing: Coordinate and assist with all high school testing (State Testing, ACT/SAT, Diagnostic); support College Credit Plus (CCP) administration and student eligibility.
- Attendance Management: Monitor and enforce attendance policies; maintain accurate record-keeping and reporting; lead truancy prevention initiatives.
- Administrative Support: Assist the Principal in general school administration; assume leadership of the building in the Principal’s absence.
- Staff Development: Assist in planning and delivering professional development; support teachers with classroom management and difficult behavior problems.
- Extracurricular Oversight: Provide administrative presence and supervision at high school athletic events, dances, and other after-school activities.
- Records & Confidentiality: Supervise the maintenance of accurate student records while maintaining strict confidentiality regarding personnel and student files.
- Communication: Act as a liaison between the school and the community; facilitate parent-teacher-student conferences regarding academic progress and behavior.
- Operational Logistics: Assist with master scheduling, textbook distribution, and student assemblies/field trips.
- Emergency Preparedness: Lead fire, tornado, and active threat drills; manage emergency situations as they arise.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Contribute to the development of student and teacher handbooks.
- Counsel students with failing grades and assist with academic intervention plans.
- Submit relevant content for the school newsletter and social media.
- Supervise student transportation (bus loading/unloading) and off-campus events.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal.
Qualifications
- Education/License: Appropriate State of Ohio Administrative or Teaching license (as required by the district).
- Experience: Proven teaching experience (High School level preferred); prior leadership or department head experience is a plus.
- Background: Valid background check and freedom from substance abuse in the workplace.

- Investigative Skills: Ability to conduct thorough, fair, and documented student investigations.
- Communication: High-level oral and written communication skills for interacting with adolescents, parents, and law enforcement/juvenile authorities.
- Strategic Thinking: Knowledge of curriculum development, adolescent development, and diverse modes of learning.
- Leadership: Ability to motivate staff and students; strong team-building and conflict-resolution skills.
- Technical Proficiency: Ability to manage student information systems (SIS) for attendance and discipline reporting.
- Legal Knowledge: Basic understanding of school law, including due process and special education regulations (IDEA/504).
