Summary
The Enterostomal Therapist aids hospital staff and physicians in the care of patients with stomas, draining wounds, fistulae, incontinence, or potential or actual tissue trauma. Manages patients with post-operative surgical wounds requiring packing or negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT), pressure ulcers and vascular ulcers. Provides support and education to patients and their families, including pre and post-operative teaching, wound care, ostomy care, and ostomy appliance maintenance/trouble-shooting.
Responsibilities
- Provides acute and rehabilitative care for people with selective disorders of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and integument systems in inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Provides patient/family education.
- Assists providers with examinations, procedures and other processes related to direct patient care and maintains appropriate patient documentation, records, and charts.
- Follows and performs all related unit specific policies and procedures, as detailed on the unit specific competency check-list.
- Utilizes job and unit specific equipment as required.
- Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise).
- Performs all other related job duties as assigned.
Experience
Generally requires 5 to 7 years of related experience.
Preferred Experience
Wound Care nurse experience strongly preferred.
Education
Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required.
Credentials
- Valid Florida RN license is required.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.
- Must meet and maintain valid and current all unit specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required by regulatory and/or nursing standard of practice for the specialty.
Preferred Credentials
WOCN certified, strongly preferred.
Unit Specific Credential
AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) with 6 months validity
