CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATION

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to perform technical tasks to safely and efficiently operate a variety of light equipment and vehicles (truck, sweepers, etc.) to perform task associated with County Departments.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position and are a representative sample. Position assignments may vary. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Operates light equipment and vehicles to perform necessary task associated with landfill and road operations (ex: to push/move trash off the tipping floor into trailers, deliver materials such as dirt, gravel, asphalt, recycling, etc.)

Assists with maintaining closed department and road hazards.

If required, maintains loading pit(s) free of debris and accessible to trailers; communicates with drivers when to enter pit. Assists with keeping wood debris pushed up and contained.

Maintains proper traffic control at work sites to ensure safety for both the work crew and the general public.

Performs preventive maintenance on equipment and machinery; checks oil and fuel levels; cleans and washes trucks and equipment.

If required, completes required paperwork, logs, and duty and incident reports; operates a two-way radio.

If necessary works during inclement weather situations, which may require extended work hours beyond normal work schedule (nights, weekends, holidays).

Performs other related duties as required.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Operating equipment in confined spaces;
  • Equipment safety precautions and procedures;
  • Traffic safety and control procedures;
  • Emergency repair techniques;
  • Erosion control measures and principles;
  • County roads system and geography (department related).

Skill in:

  • Operating light machinery, equipment and dump truck(department related);
  • Performing preventative and routine maintenance;
  • Using two-way radio and other communication equipment.

Ability to:

  • Communicate using interpersonal skills when interacting with coworkers, supervisor, inmates, the general public, etc., sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction;
  • Make decisions efficiently
  • Coordinate work projects with staff to assure efficient, safe completion of same;
  • Maintain accurate records.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent. Two to three years of work experience operating a variety of equipment; construction, maintenance and renovation tasks; or any equivalent combination of knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must be available for on-call work, as assigned. Must be able to work extended shifts as needed during inclement weather conditions. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. May be required to possess and maintain a CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with appropriate endorsements.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to maintain and conduct minor repairs on equipment, machinery, or objects, requiring adherence to prescribed standards and specifications. Requires the ability to operate and control the actions of the same equipment, machinery, and/or objects.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. May include counting, recording of counts, and basic measuring.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out detailed but routine written or oral instructions. Involves routine work according to clearly prescribed standard practices, with some latitude for independent judgment.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects and materials (20-100 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals.

Environmental Factors: Tasks may require exposure to such environmental conditions as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, and toxic agents.
