Steel Fabrication Estimator/Project Manager

Position Summary:

The Steel Fabrication Estimator/Project Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and managing steel fabrication projects from bidding and contract award through final shipment. This position serves as the primary liaison between customers, engineers, vendors, detailers, and shop personnel to ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with contract requirements, specifications, and company quality standards. The Estimator/Project Manager is responsible for estimating, overseeing project documentation, material procurement, detailing activities, production schedules, and customer communications.

Key Responsibilities:

• Manage steel and miscellaneous metal projects from bidding to award through completion.
• Review contracts, specifications, drawings, and customer requirements to determine project scope and schedule.
• Initiate and conduct Job Start-Up Meetings to review technical requirements, schedules, quality requirements, and production priorities.
• Coordinate detailing activities and review shop drawings for completeness and accuracy.
• Develop and maintain project schedules and monitor progress throughout fabrication.
• Prepare and issue shop releases and material requirements.
• Coordinate material procurement and outside services with approved vendors and subcontractors.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for customers, engineers, and subcontractors.
• Prepare and manage Requests for Information (RFIs), drawing revisions, and change orders.
• Monitor project costs, labor, and material usage to ensure profitability.
• Coordinate with shop supervision to establish fabrication priorities and delivery schedules.
• Assist in resolving design, fabrication, or scheduling issues.
• Maintain organized project records and documentation.
• Ensure compliance with contract requirements, customer specifications, company procedures, and applicable industry standards.
• Communicate project status and schedule changes to management and customers.
• Identify and report potential project risks, delays, and cost impacts.
• Support continuous improvement efforts to enhance quality, productivity, and customer satisfaction.

Qualifications:

• Experience in steel fabrication, estimating, and project management.
• Ability to read and interpret structural, architectural and various other miscellaneous fabrication drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
• Knowledge of structural steel fabrication practices and production processes.
• Familiarity with AISC standards, AWS welding requirements, and industry practices.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Experience with Tekla Structures, SDS/2, AutoCAD, or similar software is beneficial.
• Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills.
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
• Must be punctual and possess a strong work ethic.

Preferred Skills:

• Familiarity with purchasing and inventory management procedures.
• Understanding of welding symbols, connection details, and fabrication processes.
• Experience managing customer relationships and contract administration.

Work Environment:

• Office environment within a steel fabrication facility.
• Frequent interaction with project managers, shop personnel, customers, engineers, and vendors.
• Requires extended periods of computer work and occasional visits to the fabrication shop.
• May involve overtime or project-specific schedules to meet customer deadlines.
